Training Development, Co-ordination, Administration and Delivery:
Between 1989 and 2008, I worked with 'Leicestershire AIDS Support Services (LASS)', primarily regarding HIV/AIDS & sexual health, but also other health and social issues & concerns, as well as Health & Safety, Personal Safety, Confidentiality, Equal Opportunities, and Befriending.
· Many years proven experience in training & development, particularly in partnership with others, especially clinicians.
· Extensive publicity, promotion & efficient administration and co-ordination of hundreds of varied courses and sessions;
· Personally delivering a multitude of one-day, half-day and shorter training courses, presentations, workshops, seminars, and talks for over 17,000 people, from diverse backgrounds and most local groups and organisations, including small community groups, Schools/Colleges, Housing, Police, Prison, Hospitals, Local Authorities, and especially health services & social care staff whilst employed with LASS; as well as freelance training; and training on behalf of the Leicestershire & Rutland ‘Safeguarding Adults’ initiative.
· Recruiting and training nearly 500 Volunteers (as well as many paid employees).
· Developing, administrating and being the main trainer within a diverse, busy and popular training programme that I designed & developed, often in partnership with clinicians and health & social care workers.
· Publicity & promotion; bookings; confirmations; invitations and monitoring/evaluation for around 30 one-day & 20 half-day courses a year, as part of a published training programme, for hundreds of people, in addition to other outside training within workplaces.
· Development, administration & delivery of a volunteer training & development programme (for a total of 500 people, with 170 Volunteers at our height).
· Development and provision of training to enable volunteers to be effective ‘Reception’ workers, as well as ‘Training the Trainer’ sessions to enable others to assist with or deliver accurate/consistent training themselves.
· Facilitating many sessions and groups, helping others to review, recognise needs, develop knowledge and understanding, and develop ways to put things into action.
· Formal personal 'Training the Trainers' training.
· Gaining the professionally-recognised 'Certificate in Training & Development', leading to becoming an 'Associate Member' of the 'Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development' (AssocCIPD).
· Following training becoming one of the multi-agency trainers and member of the ‘Trainer’s Group’ for the Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland 'Safeguarding Adults' policy & procedures initiative, enabling me to gain (and as a trainer helping others who work with ‘vulnerable adults’ to gain) a good insight and understanding about vulnerable, isolated and lonely individuals; about abuse and adult protection; about policy and procedures regarding this; and also ways to reduce risk and create a safer environment.
· Many years experience in providing drama/theatre sessions/workshops; Health & Fitness, Sports & Athletics Instruction, Teaching & Coaching, including Circuit Training, Weight Training; and Recreational Gymnastics & Pre-School Gym/Movement/Fundamental Skills with Children, including within schools & colleges.
· From the many thousands of evaluations I have received through my training work, I have always been consistently highly regarded and rated. As an example, over 6 years (covering 206 different one-day or half-day sessions with 2376 people) I received total scores of:
· ‘Trainer’ of 10908 out of 11930 (91% rating), an average score per person of 4.6 out of a possible 5.0 (‘Good/Very Good’);
· ‘Presentation’ being rated at 88% (an average of 4.4 “Good”); and ‘Enjoyment’ rated at 86% (an average of 4.3 “Good”);
· ‘Equal Opportunities’ aspects/issues at 87% (an average of 4.0 “Good”).
· Overall, receiving a total score of 106314 out of a possible 119300 (89% satisfaction), an overall average score per participant of 4.5 out of 5.0 ("Good/Very Good").
Some unsolicited comments received upon my redundancy announcement included:
- “Your enthusiasm and insight shall be missed by the health professionals who have attended your sessions. These were always extremely informative and to the point - and nowhere else exists for us to get this kind of information in such a succinct and enjoyable manner. Community Matron”.
- “You are absolutely one of the most impressive trainers that I have had the pleasure of listening too and learning from. It is a real loss to LASS to not have you or the training you provide and that will undoubtedly affect the knowledge and skills within the city of those of us providing support to vulnerable people. Supported Housing Manager, Leicester City Council”.
- “I have done training with you as trainer over the last few years and I was very impressed with the standard of the training, your knowledge and excellent presentational skills. Social Worker, Community Mental Health Team, City East”.
- “About 10 years ago you trained me on one of your HIV awareness courses, but also at the same time I was coming to terms with my own HIV status...As a heterosexual man in the late 90’s, I had some big issues dealing with my status, and just want to say that you and your training course helped me through some very dark times. LASS and the hospital were great and provide me with support, but I needed hard facts and you gave me some of the most useful and honest information at the time, for that I thank you. For the record 10 years later I’m still here and plan to be for a long time yet. I wish you all the luck in the future, and hope that you find somewhere that can use you skills and talents. A LASS Service User”.
- “I have received training from LASS in connection with my work with children and families. I found the training to be excellent and very useful, giving me confidence to believe that I could understand a bit of what it is like for families living with AIDS/HIV. …I want to thank you for your contribution you have made to helping Leicester and Leicestershire be a place where AIDS in understood and people are treated with the dignity, care, love and attention they deserve. Primary Mental Health Worker, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service”.
- “Just like to say thank you for your organising. I have had many staff and medical students who have enjoyed and found the courses you had put on as being very informative, which I hope has also contributed to the care that they now offer clients and patients. School Nurse/Manager, St Peters Health Centre”.
In addition, I received thousands of complementary comments from participants regarding my work and training, the benefits it has made to them, and my “knowledgeable”, “friendly”, “relaxed” and “participatory approach”, treating people as individuals with “respect” and “courtesy”, which gives me immense satisfaction and confidence.
