YOUTH/COMMUNITY WORKQualified Youth & Community Worker: - 'Certificate in Youth & Community Development'
('Leicester Polytechnic', Full-Time Training, 1987-89 - Leading to professionally recognised NJC Youth & Community Work Qualification).
- 'Arts Award (Bronze & Silver) Adviser' - Trained to be an 'Arts Award' accredited advisor acting as a catalyst, mentor and assessor with young people for Bronze & Silver 'Arts Award' ('Trinity Guildhall' / Leicestershire Arts in Education, Feb 2010).
COLLEGE PLACEMENTS (Youth & Community Development):
- 'Golden Hours Retirement Group': A weekly involvement with a Senior Citizens social Group, included devising & presenting a social education-based session focusing on the issue of 'War', featuring poems, writings & personal experiences, to stimulate discussion, recognition of experience, thinking, reflection and further understanding (Oct-Dec 1987).
- 'Beachamp Community College', Oadby, Leicestershire: An 8 week full-time placement as a 'community Youth Tutor, involved in a range of work, including within a fourth year modular studies component and the involvement of Youth Club members in the recruitment of part-time Youth Workers (April-May 1988).
- 'Mundella Community College', Leicester: Regular sessions with 14 year olds, constructing an educationally-based curriculum using drama, social & lifeskills-related theory, processes & methods, exploring my role as informal educator, enabling & facilitating the group, to raise, explore & think critically about issues which concern them, to help develop clearer understanding, awareness & confidence (Sept-Dec 1988).
- 'Leicestershire AIDS Support Services' (LASS): Initially a 10 week full-time (and subsequently 6 weeks compiling a Research Study) placement as an additional Co-ordinator/Development Work for this developing HIV/AIDS voluntary agency , including administrating & assisting with delivery of their Volunteer Training Programme, and a lengthy and detailed action research study focusing upon Service Provision in Leicestershire for people living with HIV/AIDS, presented to 'Leicestershire Health' to highlight areas of concern, recommendations for improvement, etc (Jan - April 1989).
SOME SPECIFIC YOUTH & COMMUNITY EMPLOYMENT: - London Central YMCA -'Youth Worker/Youth Tutor' : Part-time Youth Worker (20 hrs a week) to develop and maintain the YMCA Junior Programme, and to facilitate the regular educational and social activities, and involvement as Youth Drama Tutor (Inner London Education Authority, P/T, July 1986-Sept 1987).
- Hornsey YMCA -'Youth & Community Worker': Pre-school gym, movement and drama-related sessions; gymnastics and sport-related sessions, particularly for 4-11 year olds at the YMCA and within local schools; regular working in the centre's creche; and two-week Playscheme for 5-14 year olds at a local school (P/T, Sept 1986-May 1987).
- Palace Theatre, Redditch -'Professional Actor/teacher': A season with the Young Peoples' Theatre Company in various productions, Youth Drama Workshops, etc. (F/T, Sept 1983-Jan 1984) - with various acting, drama and theatre work following this on and off.
- 'Voluntary Action South Leicestershire (VASL)' -'Youth Volunteer Development Manager/Project Co-ordinator' with 'vinvolved team' (Leicestershire & Rutland), part of v, the national youth volunteering programme, working to raise awareness about youth volunteering; encouraging young people aged 16-25 to get positively involved in their community; and working together with groups & organisations to develop the quality and quantity of youth volunteering opportunities and foster youth-led action (F/T, 2nd June 2008 - 31st March 2011).
Working with Young People:
From a young age, I have had an interest, enthusiasm and commitment in supporting other young people to engage with and become more actively involved in democratic processes and campaigns; develop their knowledge, skills & experience; increasing their participation & involvement; enabling their voice to be heard; empowering their ability to influence and affect change; to achieve their dreams, interests and desires; and to improve the quality of their lives.
I have substantial knowledge, skills and experience of working with children, young people, young adults and also adults generally in a range of capacities, including:
- From the age of 15 for around two years, I was actively involved in the youth-led ‘National Union of School Students’ (NUSS), recruiting members in my own school and being elected to the position of school branch Secretary and student representative on the school Board of Governors; and then elected at the National Conference to the position of ‘National Secretary’, regularly attending Executive and National Committee meetings and working together with other young people on campaigns, events, activities, etc.
- Being an elected President & also Secretary of ‘Rose Bruford College’ Students Union, Academic Board member and Student Governor; and an elected Student Council member at ‘Leicester Polytechnic’ Students Union, including representing other students on the course ‘Board of Studies’.
- As a qualified ‘Youth & Community Development Worker’, previously being key worker with ‘London Central YMCA’ on their Junior & Summer Programmes, and Youth Drama Worker; and also a range of varied placements whilst on Youth & Community Development course.
- Being trained, qualified and experienced in theatre, drama, theatre-in-education and community theatre arts, having also worked professionally as an Actor/teacher and youth drama worker, leading sessions, providing workshops, devising shows, etc, with and for young people.
- Involved as a Youth Worker & Youth Drama Tutor with the YMCA, including a Weight Training Instructor in a community project for young unemployed people, in addition to being a regular qualified Circuit & Weight Training instructor with adults at ‘London Central YMCA’ and other places.
- Employed as a Youth & Community Worker in a Sport & Recreation Project with ‘Hornsey YMCA’, devising and facilitating pre-school gym, movement, drama, recreational gymnastics and sport-related sessions for children (4-11 years) at the YMCA and local schools, including regular Crèche work and Playscheme for 5-14 year olds, including a range of previous coaching awards.
- For over 18 years, substantial involvement with young people, particularly in schools and colleges, providing sessions and workshops with young people, educating and informing about HIV/AIDS, Sexual Health, Personal & Social Education, and also Personal Safety, whilst employed with ‘Leicestershire AIDS Support Services’.
- Since 2005, regularly coaching young people (6-17 years olds) in athletics as a ‘UK Athletics’ Level 2 coach with ‘Owls A.C Leicester’; involvement in coaching & managing the ‘District of Harborough’ Year 5/6 Athletics Team for the ‘Leicester-Shire & Rutland Youth Games’ in both 2006 & 2007; and running after-school athletics, FUNdamentals of Movement, and Speed, Agility & Quickness for Year 4-6 children at ‘Redlands Primary School’, Sileby.
- Working with ‘In2Sports Ltd’, an organisation that acted as a partner to deliver sports services for and on behalf of individuals & organisations across the voluntary, public & private sectors, using 'sport as a vehicle' to contribute to a range of social issues, including health, education, crime reduction & social cohesion. As a Sports Instructor, I was responsible for planning & delivering sports related sessions, mostly related to the PE Curriculum, and being responsible for groups of children and young people in a variety of settings, particularly schools (especially covering the PE curriculum and lunchtime & afterschool clubs in two Primary Schools), as well as proviison of early-years (2-5 years) 'Fundamentals of Movement’ classes.
