PARTNERSHIP WORKING
- Eighteen busy, developing and successful years working in the field of HIV/AIDS and sexual health, particularly initiating & working in partnership with many other individuals and diverse organisations in Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland and on a national basis.
- In addition to HIV/AIDS, my recognition of related and wider sexual health and other health concerns and social issues has enabled me to be pro-active in identifying training needs and developing additional training and partnership working, particularly in liaison with other workers/agencies.
This particularly included me initiating partnership training & joint working with:
- The Hepatitis Nurse Specialists at ‘Leicester Royal Infirmary’ and Team Leader at the ‘Community Drug Services’ on the development of much needed Hepatitis awareness training, with me negotiating with ‘Roche Ltd’ for a grant to assist with publicity and promotion.
- The TB Clinical Nurse Manager and her team at the ‘Glenfield Hospital’ for the development of regular awareness training over a number of years about Tuberculosis.
“Your support in providing the TB sessions has proved invaluable for us because attendees on your courses have been from such diverse and useful professional backgrounds. We would be extremely sorry to see the sessions cease. Thanks so much for all your hard work Gordon and best wishes for the future. Kind regards, Clinical Nurse Manager, Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland TB Service (Leicester City PCT)”.
- Senior Infectious Diseases Consultants at ‘Leicester Royal Infirmary’ regarding regular awareness training on various aspects of HIV/AIDS, Sexually Transmitted Infections, Drugs & Treatments, Sexual Health, and Equality Issues regarding Care.
“You have made an enormous contribution to the welfare of those affected by HIV in Leicestershire and will be missed. I hope we don't lose your expertise completely. Do you have any further plans yet? I've enjoyed working with you. All the very best for the future. Senior Consultant Infectious Diseases, Leicester Royal Infirmary”.
- The ‘Drug Advice Centre’; ‘ASSIST Service for Asylum Seekers’; ‘Homeless Primary Healthcare Service’; ‘TRADE – Men’s Sexual Health Project’; ‘Leicester Royal Infirmary – Play Specialists’ regarding issues for children; ‘Faith in People with HIV’ project; ‘Leicestershire County Council’ and ‘Leicester City Council’, especially Social Care & Health, all Children & Family Centres, and all Home Carers.
“This was the first of many workshops for Home Care. Gordon has delivered the training at the right (perfect) level to address issues within our service area (regarding knowledge, attitudes and health & safety). As the Lead Officer involved in setting up this training, I am delighted with the start. Well done Gordon”. Lead Officer, Leicester City Council, Home Care Service”.
Over many years, I developed, influenced or assisted in a range of other partnership initiatives involving many other groups & organisations regarding other sexual health or related social concerns, such as around ‘World AIDS Day’; ‘World TB Day’; around wider poverty work through the national ‘Make Poverty History’ campaign (and later the ‘Leicester Make Poverty History Group’) that we were ‘founder’ partners of both; and regarding the ‘Earth Summit’ in a local multi-agency partnership called ‘Globeshare’.
In my work with the vinvolved team for Leicestershire & Rutland, I have been particularly responsible for:
- Providing training, support and capacity building services to youth brokers and volunteer-involving organisations to increase the quality, quantity and availability of volunteering opportunities for young people.
- Working in partnership with groups and organisations to develop new volunteering opportunities in areas that reflect young peoples’ interests and passions, particularly Sports Volunteering.
- Plugging into local and regional networks to promote youth volunteering, develop positive partnerships and identify available resources.
- Developing & attending partnerships to support young people and volunteer-involving organisations in developing volunteering opportunities, particularly sports Volunteering.
- Developing & attending partnerships with schools and other education providers to create accreditation opportunities.
- Developing & attending creative partnerships in the private and media sector, to facilitate sponsorship opportunities and to raise the profile of volunteering locally.
- Development and facilitation of a ‘Youth Volunteering Forum’ to develop partnerships, improve good practice and volunteering, participation and youth-led opportunities for young people.
- Presentations to partner groups, organisations, forums, etc.
