Mr David Witcombe

Dorset and West Pastfinders

Dear Mr Witcombe

I am writing on behalf of the Parochial Church Council to thank you and the members of Dorset and West Pastfinders for your most generous donation to St Peter’s Church yesterday.  I assure you that it will be put to good use as our lovely church is in need of some major repair work. Your contribution is most welcome and timely.  I am sorry, however, that the weather was not very kind to you.

I hope that your endeavours were rewarded by some interesting finds.  There has been some sort of settlement in Pimperne for many centuries and the village was recorded in the Domesday Book.  There is rumoured to have been a Saxon church on the site of the current building but nothing of that remains.  We do, however, have some remains of the Norman building which the Victorians kindly included when they built the present church.  And our font is the only one in Dorset to have a stone cover.  Sadly, this is the result of a ‘marriage’ made sometime in the 16C when a stone cover was found in a nearby field.

Pimperne was among lands given by Henry VIII to two of his queens – Catherine Howard and Katherine Parr.  There is no record of either queen having set foot in  the village!  All this is a roundabout way of saying that we have an interesting history, which I hope might have generated a find or two for your members.

Thank you all for your generosity.

Yours sincerely,

Velda E Andrews
