CUBERT PARISH

SOCIAL CLUB

Volunteering for a Shift Behind the Bar

9th March 2025

The Social Club people have been training up volunteers to work behind the bar, including yours truly (Calvin and Julia).  There was a lot to learn, but it was really good fun!  The whole idea behind this initiative is to share the work around and give some relief to the Social Club committee members who put in quite a few hours each month.  So, we will be doing our best to serve on at least one Sunday a month and will no doubt stand in when it gets busy at a major event.  If you fancy giving up a little time each month to help out I know the Club will be delighted to hear from you.

New Year's Eve at the Social Club

2nd January 2025

Well, who would have thought it?  With only about three weeks to go before the big night, the Social Club Committee thought it might be a good idea to open an extra night to see in the new year.  They only expected a few people in the bar, but still obtained a temporary events licence to allow them to expand into the hall, just in case.  What a good thing they did as over 70 people came through the doors on the night and everyone had a great time!  Well done to the Social Club and all those who helped out on the night to make it so successful!

Social Club Up and Running

11th August 2024

It's been great to see so many people using the Cubert Social Club.  I personally recommend John's Quiz on a Thursday night, but its also proven to be a great place to pop into and catch up with village life from Thursday to Sunday.  Don't forget that you need to be a member.  If you would like to volunteer to work behind the bar please make enquiries down at the club.  Training given.

Opening Hours

Thursday    7pm - 10pm

Friday         7pm - 10pm

Saturday     7pm - 10pm

Sunday        4pm -7pm

Not long to go before the Social Club opens

2nd July 2024

Hats off to Tony and Colin and all the volunteers who have come together to transform the old kitchen and meeting room into what will become our very own village social club.  They have done a tremendous job in difficult circumstances and now they are close to the finishing line for an opening a little later this month.  As soon as I have a confirmed date for the grand opening I will publish it here.

Social Club Facebook Page

31st May 2024

The Cubert Social Club Facebook page now has 119 members.  That's another 46 since 1st April, which reflects the growing interest in the club as the work to create it continues.  In fact, at this rate, membership will surpass that of the village hall facebook page, so well done to the Social Club!

Works to create the Social Club Begins!

14th June 2024

Those of you who have visited the Hall recently will have noticed that work has begun to transform the kitchen and old committee room.  When completed, the committee room will become the lounge and the enlarged kitchen will double up as the serving bar and the hall's kitchen.  The work is challenging because it has to be done by volunteers when the hall is not in use.  The Social Club Committee is hoping that the work will be complete before the middle of July.  The work is being carried out by Tony and Colin and other volunteers, including trades people.  The costs associated with the alterations are being paid for through a combination of a grant from the drinks supplier and membership fees.  The Village Hall has also made available a loan to be repaid once the drinks supplier's grant has been recieved.  If you would like to offer help do please contact Tony at the email shown below in the previous story.

Staffing the Social Club

14th May 2024

Although volunteers have come forward and offered to staff the bar, the Social Club Committee are also considering the possibility of paying a person to run the bar on a self-employed basis.  If you or someone you know would be interested then do please contact Tony via his email address on cubertsocialclub@hotmail.com  Experience is desirable, but not necessary as training will be given.

Cubert Social Club calls for Volunteers

Tony, Colin and the rest of the team on the Cubert Social Club Sub-Committee are calling for volunteers to help run the bar.  There’s going to be a monthly rota and volunteers can choose to work one or more sessions per month.  If you have no experience working behind the bar, don’t worry, training will be available.  Small social clubs really do rely on volunteers and so if you can spare one or two evenings a month please contact Tony on cubertsocialclub@hotmail.com  I know he will be very pleased to hear from you.  If you would like to know more you can also chat to him and the team at one of the membership sign-up evenings at the village hall.  Scroll down for details.

Cubert Social Club Membership

Hot off the press. 10th April 2024

The Cubert Social Club is signing up members this month. The fee for the remainder of 2024 is £10. The membership fees will be reviewed each year thereafter. This doesn’t mean the fee will be increased but, of course, this cannot be guaranteed.  In order to beat any future increases and to raise the necessary start-up funds, the Social Club is offering multiple year memberships up to 5 years.  Seems like a very good deal!

To get things going, Tony Savage has arranged two sign-up sessions at the village hall. These are:

Monday April 22nd from 7pm to 8pm and

Monday April 29th from 7pm to 8pm

Editor's Note:

Previous polls and meetings have confirmed there is a great deal of support for a social club in the parish, so let’s confirm our enthusiasm for this venture by turning out in large numbers.

The Cubert Social Club’s Next Step

The application for a Club Licence has now been formally submitted by the Cubert Social Club (CSC) and very shortly you will see formal consultation notices being posted up at the village hall and on its noticeboard near the post office.  This will give everyone an opportunity to have their say about the granting of the licence.  Meanwhile, Tony, Colin and the rest of the team are working hard to source equipment, materials, skilled labour and help in order to be at the ready should their application be successful.  On the granting of the licence the CSC will be inviting local people to join the club which, along with funding assistance from the village hall, should raise sufficient funds to see the project through to its completion.  Exciting Times!

The Cubert Social Club Facebook Page now has 80 members.  Do please join and share the page to your neighbours.

1st April 2024

Tony and Colin met with a representative of Cornwall Council's Licencing Department on 22nd March and completed the application for the club premises certificate.  They won't hear back from them for at least a month so in the meantime they have continued to work on planning for the alterations at the hall and they've held a first meeting with their colleagues on the Cubert Social Club Subcommittee.  Their Facebook page is gaining a decent following too with 73 members as of today.  Watch this space for further updates.

7th March 2024

The Social Club have created a Facebook Page called 'Cubert Social Club'.  Do show your support by visiting the page and joining.  As of now (8th March) 35 people have joined!

6th March 2024

Members of the Village Hall Committee and the Social Club Committee met together at the Village Hall on Wednesday 6th March to talk about the proposed kitchen and committee room alterations needed in order to create a social club at the hall.  It was a positive meeting and it was agreed for the social club to take the next step and make an application for a club premises certificate.  After the application is submitted, Cornwall Council's Licencing Department will require us to put up notices at the hall inviting comments.  The Parish Council and other statutory bodies will be consulted and all of this will take a minimum of 28 days, so probably longer.  Watch this space for further updates

2nd March 2024

At the February '24 meeting of the Village Hall Committee (VH Committee) the Social Club proposal was discussed in detail.  The committee voted in favour of pursuing the project.  A meeting between the VH Committee and the newly formed Social Club Sub-Committee is taking place at the hall on Wednesday 6th March.  This will give everyone the opportunity to understand the alterations that need to take place to accommodate the club and to consider making an application for a club premises licence.  The creation of a social club will be a big change for the hall and the VH Committee have to ensure its development is in line with Charity Commission rules and compliant with other relevant regulations.

21st February 2024

The meeting below took place as arranged and approximately 45 parishioners attended, including representatives from the Parish Council and the Village Hall Committee.  A show of hands in support was requested and all, but those from the two formal bodies, voted in favour of the plans to start a social club at the village hall.  The two formal bodies didn't cast a vote because the Village Hall Committee has to consider the matter further before giving permission to carry out any works and the Parish Council, being a statutory consultee, will be consulted separately should a club premises licence be applied for.

A further meeting is taking place between the Social Club and the Village Hall Committee very soon and we will publish further developments on this page.

5th February 2024

There is a renewed effort to form a social club at the village hall.  A sub-committee has been formed and a public meeting is taking place at the hall on Thursday 15th February at 7:30pm.  See Latest News tab for further information.  Progress will be reported here.

Previous efforts to create a social club took place during 2022.  Please scroll down to learn about the progress made then.
