Toilet Blockages Continue..
During the festivities at the Hall to celebrate the Social Club's first year of successful operations the toilets became blocked again! This time the cause of the blockage seems to have been the sheer volume of people attending the event, rather than some unsuitable item stuffed down the toilet pan. So, the blockage has and is being investigated by professionals and we will report the findings back to you just as soon as we know the way forward. In the meantime, sanatory bins have been put into all of the closets, including the gents. Especially during very busy events (e.g. the upcoming Elvis Night) visitors are politely asked to be mindful about the quantity of tissue being flushed down the pans. It seems that the pipe that takes the waste from our toilets runs beneath the rear car park and into the adjacent field. It has a very small fall and as a consequence we get backing up occuring along its route. That's enough about toilets until I have something positive to report!
A Short Back and Sides for the Hall
July and August is the time of year when the Village Hall Committee members and some volunteers roll up to the hall for a bit of tidying. The hedges have been cut back, paths have been swept and cleared of weeds, windows have been cleaned. A few small changes have taken place in the storerooms, some DIY jobs have been completed and you will have definately noticed that the Hall has been painted! If you would like to help out in the future then do please get in touch with us. Better still, why not come along to our AGM on August 26th at 7pm. This is your chance to volunteer your services to the committee - or join it!
Murder Mystery a Great Success!
We are pleased to report that our Murder Mystery fundraiser proved to be a very successful evening. Back on the 12th July Roland Kitchen (Holywell) and his fellow players, The Red Herrings from Gloucestershire, came to the hall to present their mini play, 'The Pirate and the Parrot'. Sixty-seven amateur detectives then pondered over the evidence to establish 'who done it'. Three of them solved the crime with 100% accuracy and were awarded certificates. At half time our detectives were served with pasties, quiches and pudding and the Social Club were on hand to supply the rum.
Many thanks goes to The Red Herrings for a very enjoyable night and all the people who helped put on the event which raised a magnificent £445! This money is going straight into our re-roofing fund for the hall.
Annual General Meeting
Owing to a number of committee members being away in September this year, we've brought the AGM forward by one month to August. It will take place at the Village Hall on Tuesday 26th August 2025 in the Village Hall starting at 7pm. We would love to see lots of you there.
Nominations to join the committee should be by email and made by Tuesday 19th August 2025 to Deborah Hopkinson (Secretary) to cubertvillagehall@outlook.com OR in person at the AGM.
This is an opportune moment to let you know that we are looking for volunteers to help us at the hall. You do not need to be on the committee to do so. We are especially looking for assistance with administration and applying for grants.
If you have recently retired, or maybe you have just moved into the area and are looking for something to do in the community, then helping us out might be just the thing you are looking for.
All parishioners are invited and very welcome to attend. We look forward to seeing you on the night.

New Member on the VH Committee
It's a very warm welcome to Colin Mortlock who has joined us on the Village Hall Committee. Colin, who has lived in the village for donkey's years is, as you know, a committed and founding member of the Cubert Social Club. He will be the Social Club representative and his in-depth knowledge about all things connected with running a successful business will be very welcomed!
Let's All Look after the Car Park
This is a polite request to youngsters and their parents/ guardians concerning the use of the rear car park at the Village Hall.
As many of you will know, last year we had the car park enlarged and resurfaced. We think it looks pretty good and we would like it to stay that way. Last week we were somewhat disappointed to see a young person repeatedly throwing a rock onto the tarmac surface to see if they could either break the rock or damage the surface of the car park. Whichever it was, we would ask that they don't do it again.
The car park is there for hall users to park their cars and for events that might be put on by hall users, such as the Cubert and Holywell Carnival Committee. It may also be used to walk from the Church Field into the allotments. No matter the temptation, it cannot be used as a cycling track or a football pitch and neither can it be used for the purpose of rock breaking. We are clearly concerned about the damage that could be caused to either the car park surface, the hall's windows or the parked cars.
Many thanks and sorry about the moan.
Approach from EE to site a phone mast at the Village Hall Update
As a result of the comments placed on Facebook concerning the approach from EE to erect a phone mast at the Village Hall, we've been in touch with them and have some answers.
Before providing you with this information it is important for us to state that the Village Hall Management Committee have agreed to start negotiations with EE.
We agreed to proceed for several reasons. There will be an improved mobile phone signal in and around the village for EE customers and potentially others. (also see the Q&A's below) Whilst the mast will serve the village it will be located on its outskirts. The Village Hall will be paid rent each year by EE.
We have engaged Jo Maynard Ltd (Chartered Surveyors) and a lawyer to act on our behalf. This is being paid for by EE.
We asked the following questions:
What public engagement and consultation will be undertaken and at what stage of the process will this take place?
They answered:
We are awaiting the drawings and intend to start pre-application consultation. This would be local stakeholders, such as Councillors, Parish Councils, Schools and then the Local Planning Authority. [A formal planning application will then be submitted]
We asked:
What will the mast look like? Are there any nearby examples?
They answered:
There is a similar 20m structure (3m higher than the one planned for the hall) in Gannel Road, Newquay TR7 1SB E:180370 N:061366. [We will post a photo of this one on the Village Hall Facebook page soon]
We asked:
Will the mast improve mobile phone signals for all, or is it just EE customers?
They answered:
Just EE at this point in time, but it is a shareable structure should other operators wish to use it. It is worth noting that EE now hosts the new Emergency Services Network (ESN) and so this mast will provide coverage in this area.
We hope this information is useful to you. We will keep you up-to-date as soon as we receive further information.
Toilet Blockages Slowing Things Down
The only downside of the Rudi's Message night were the slow draining toilet pans. The cause, we're sorry to say, was no less than three sanitary towels caught in the U-bends. As a consequence, three more sanitary bins have been purchased for each of the closets, including the gents! The gent's has been included as it was being used by ladies due to the sheer volume of people attending the successful event. Needless to say, nothing other than toilet tissue can be put down the toilets.
Rudi's Message is a huge success!
Saturday 21st June saw probably the most most successful music event ever at the Village Hall. The sell-out saw one hundred and twenty people of all ages descend into the hall to be entertained by the most popular Ska band in Cornwall; Rudi's Message. Many thanks goes to the committee members and volunteers of both the Cubert and Holywell Carnival Committee (CHCC) and the Social Club Committee for setting the whole thing up and keeping us well watered. The monies raised will go towards the Xmas lights and other events put on by the CHCC.
A Change of Personnel
Gareth Rowe, who has been the Parish Council representative on the Village Hall Committee for the past two years, has come to the end of his tenure with us. Gareth has been a hugely valuable member of the team, particularly with the important grant applications and advising us on capital projects. Fortunately for us he is going to continue to help us as a non-committee member into the future with our larger projects. A big thank you to Gareth for all he has done for us.
Gareth's position has been taken up by John Sekula who recently joined the Parish Council. Many of you will know him as the Quiz Master Extraordinaire who sets the questions down at the Social Club every Thursday night. A warm welcome to John.
If you would like to join our merry team or become a volunteer for the Village Hall committee do please get in touch with us. We always need a little extra help.
Premises Licence Granted!
Great News! The Cubert Social Club has been successful with its application for a Premises Licence. The new licence covers the entire Hall and its grounds, which means that the Social Club can now serve drinks into the Hall and the car park without having to apply for a Temporary Events Notice (TEN). This flexibility is good news for the Social Club, the Village Hall and the Cubert community. In practice, the Social Club will continue to operate as a Club under the direction of its committee of volunteers and membership will still be necessary. However, if there are events in the hall, such as parties and wedding receptions, the Club will be able to operate as if it was a public house negating the need for a TEN.
Three More Improvements to The Hall
We're pleased to inform you that we have put down a new 'Altro' floor in the kitchen/bar. I'll be saying more about that very soon, but a huge thank you to everyone who helped out.
We've also made life easier for social events in the main hall by providing additional electric sockets. There are some new ones and some have been repositioned. This work, which is part of the Village Hall Ambience Project, will enable us to provide new mood lighting around the hall and spotlighting for the stage end. It will also reduce the need for so many extension leads!
Thanks too goes to Rob and Jim for soundproofing an unused door into Karen's beauty treatment room. We are hoping that noise transference from the main hall into the treatment room will now be greatly reduced.

A Few More Jobs Done
Many thanks to Rob and Jim for sorting out a gutter leak at the back of the storerooms and thanks again to Rob for fixing the door to storeroom 3 which had lost its wind brace. The brace stops the door from blowing back against its hinges in strong winds and so was a very important repair.

Some Polite Requests From Us
TOILETS Unfortunately, some person flushed a J Cloth down one of the toilet pans causing a blockage. We had to call out Pellows to unblock it. Apart from the unmentionables, the only thing that can be safely flushed down the pan is toilet tissue paper. Compliance with this request will help us avoid costly unblocking bills. There are now sanitary bins in all cubicals, including the gent's.Many thanks.
DOUBLE DOORS SECURITY Both the main entrance doors and the external doors to storeroom 1 have been left unsecured recently. The problem occurs when BOTH the front doors are opened and the person locking up forgets to re-engage the recessed shootbolts on the secondary door (that's the one that doesn't get used much). Do please ensure that those bolts are re-engaged, because without them in place the doors are unsecure and we're not insured. Many thanks.
STORAGE OF CHAIRS AND TABLES There's a photograph on the internal door to Storeroom 1 showing you how to stack the chairs and tables when putting them back. You'll see that it's one row of chairs with a maximum of 6 chairs in a stack. The rest go into Storeroom 2. For some odd reason we end up with two rows, 8 and 4 in a stack, not enough chairs or too many! This causes obstruction in already crowded Storerooms, which we've then got to sort out. This probably happens because lots of people very kindly help out at the end of an event and simply do their thing to get the job done quickly. We would politely ask that the hirer checks the 'putting away' has been done properly before locking up. Many thanks.

More Jobs Done!
These last few weeks saw several more jobs completed down at the Village Hall. The old external kitchen door was replaced and, along with the new entrance, we think you would agree that the front of the hall looks a lot more attractive. Deborah and Andrew replaced nearly all of the kitchen cupboard doors and repositioned the parking sign in the front car park. Thank you both very much! Shelving has been added to the new store cupboard at the end of the hall and a door fitted. This cupboard (For the Social Club) has now been finished.
Clare Bradder, the Hall's Housekeeper, continues to work her magic keeping the hall shiny and spotless and I have no doubt that we will be embarking upon a clean of the external parts of the hall when spring arrives.

New Entrance Doors Installed
It's really pleasing to see the new entrance door in place at the village hall. This improvement was funded through a grant from the Government's Community Levelling up Programme. In the new year, the external kitchen door was replaced as well. The new entrance door is much easier to use and it opens outwards, which is a fire safety requirement.

The Murder Mystery Fundraising Event is a big success!
Saturday 11th June saw sixty-five amateur sleuths descend upon our village hall to solve a most dastardly murder. During the break they enjoyed a pasty and a pudding and at the end of the evening the clever few who had managed to solve the crime were rewarded with certificates and chocolates. here was some great feedback and several people have asked to do it all again next year. See the write-up on our Facebook page. The event raised £430.03, which will be used to maintain the hall and its facilities.

Your Village Hall Still Needs Your Help
This is a message from Colleen Bright, Chair of the Village Hall Committee:
"The Village Hall is a great facility, which is currently undergoing further necessary improvements aimed at ensuring it will be there to serve the community for many years to come.
And what a busy time it is for us at the moment! This year we're raising the Hall's ceiling; the car park is being resurfaced and re-lined to maximise car parking spaces; the social club is being developed and we're planning more social events at the Hall.
In overseeing the day-to-day running of the Hall, the volunteers on the committee work very well together to do what is needed. What we could really do with, however, is more help with the administrative and financial tasks we have. Do you have these skills and are you able to spare a few hours each month to help the Village Hall Committee? If so, we would love to hear from you. Perhaps you would like to come along to the next committee meeting to see what it's all about and meet the committee members?"
If you think this is something for you, or you would like to know more about us then please contact us using the email below. We would love to hear from you!
