THE ORIGINAL HALL
Prior to the current Village Hall there was wooden structure which stood at right angles to the road. At one end was a stage with a curtain rail across the front. The Hall was well used and even doubled up as an additional classroom for Cubert Primary School.

FINANCE
It was recognised that a new Village Hall was called for and so the fundraising began for the Village Hall Build project. Stan Norfolk was the Village Hall Committee treasurer and for a good number of years before 1981, he and Muriel Robson, Gertie Johns and other helpers, ran Bingo sessions every Thursday in the summers and accumulated approximately £9,000 to go towards the new project.
Also, an appeal went out to Parishioners to either give or lend money contributing £1,500 in total.
With the assistance of Gloria Alsey of the Rural Communities Association, Stan negotiated grants from Cornwall County Council, Truro Rural District Council, the Department Of Education and also Cubert Parish Council totalling £34,565. The total cost of construction was £41,500 and would have cost a lot more if the volunteers had not been present (see photo below of the volunteers and names). The wooden Village Hall was also sold for £150!

THE ANGLER’S ROOM
The Cubert Sea Anglers involved themselves in the project contributing to the work force during construction. When the new Hall was completed, the Anglers organised Bingo sessions and donated 25% of the proceeds to the Village Hall funds. They also donated £50 for a heater in the room known as 'The Anglers' Room'. This room had an outside door used for access by the Anglers, at all times of the day or night. They would do the 'weigh-ins' after fishing competitions and then enjoy a dry place for a tea or coffee and a smoke.
The Sea Anglers eventually moved out and in the 1990’s the room became a doctor’s surgery, then a Physiotherapy practice and is now a Beauty room.

VOLUNTEERS
Photo of many of the volunteers who built the Hall
The plans were drawn up by Charles Pickering. Tony Savage became the Chairman, and then Peter Lewis. John Wells was Treasurer for the building project and Geoff May the Secretary. The building work mainly took place on Sunday mornings where most of the volunteers were unskilled, with only a few actual tradesmen. This great team of volunteers achieved their aim and the Village Hall was opened officially on 12th September 1981 by W.T. Hawken Rowse CBE
