Recently MyHermes is getting competitive and you can drop it off at a parcel shop or have it collected from home if that suits you better. Select 10Kg for a Lever machine or 15kg for a Silvia. You can get up to £250 insurance cover.
Alternatively you could use a collected parcel service supplier such a Parcel2Go, but the insurance is quite expensive
Just remove and keep the drip tray, boiler cap, steam wand , but send the filter holder for inspection. Box tightly so that it is not touching the sides of the box and cannot move. If you are sending an old machine (extenal threads on the boiler) please include the boiler cap.
A great source of boxes and packaging is the recycling centre (aka "The Tip") There is usually a skip full of strong cardboard boxes. An ideal box size and strength is a 6 bottle wine shipping box. I have also found great success with 2 litre plastic soft drink/milk bottles. They can be adjusted by squeezing them and re-tightening the cap. They provide great cushioning and are very light compared to their volume, much lighter than paper.
Note; your machine will be MUCH easier to pack if you can remove the lever (see photo at bottom of page). Lever the circlip off one end of each of the lever pins with a screw driver and push out the pins with the screwdriver. DO INCLUDE the lever but wrap the lever well making sure it will not damage the machine (note there is a small roller, which one of the pins passes through).
If the lever will not come off, don't worry, just send it as it is in a bigger box.
