Kyakatara Project

This project will provide piped water supplies to the Kyakatara Health Centre by harvesting rainwater from the Health Centre roof. At present the Health Centre has no running water - all water has to be carried in jerry cans more than 100 metres uphill from a bore-hole.

The Kyakatara Health Centre serves 38 villages – in total 18,586 people. In 2008-09 there were 15,890 patients’ visits to the Centre. The hospital wards have 10 maternity beds, 10 female beds, 10 male beds and 10 beds for children.

The Centre includes an out patients clinic, a laboratory, HIV/Aids counselling, pharmacy, ante-natal services and a delivery room where almost 900 babies were born last year. Laboratory staff test blood, urine and faeces for most common complaints as well as malaria, HIV/Aids and gastro-intestinal disorders.
The Health Centre is the only facility available to care for the local community. It is part of a not-for-profit Rural Development Trust, which has a local management committee.
The project will provide clean piped water to the outside of the Kyakatara Health Centre building. The senior members of staff believe that patient care is of prime importance; however standards are difficult to maintain without running water. The piped water will enable washing and hygiene standards to be greatly improved.
The project includes gutters to collect rainwater from the Health Centre roof, pipes to direct water to a 40,000 litre collection tank, a water pump, a header tank, piping for water to flow by gravity to the outside of the Health Centre, stand-pipes outside the staff accommodation and canteen buildings, and waste water disposal. It is estimated that the project will take approximately 6 months to complete.
