Eating Out

There is an excellent choice of places to eat, two within walking distance, and others a short drive away.  Fresh local seafood is a speciality and served at all local restaurants.

LOCAL EATING PLACES

I am hesitant about recommending eating places since tastes differ and I wouldn’t want you to be disappointed.  Fresh, local seafood is almost always available.  Any comments below are purely my personal opinion.  Sample menus to help you make your own choices are in the folder in the apartment.

LOCH MELFORT HOTEL.  Tel:  01852 200233 (1 mile/20 - 30 minutes walk along the road) This 4 Star hotel offers a choice of fine dining Table d’Hote in the Asknish Bay Restaurant (booking essential) or more casual A la Carte meals in their bistro, the Chart Room.  Both have wonderful views looking down the loch.  The first and third Friday of each month are “Music Evenings” starting at about 9.30 p.m.

LORD OF THE ISLES, Craobh Haven Tel:  01852 500658 (2 mile drive, ½ an hour’s walk along a track beside the sea).  This is a pub in the heart of the village.

ROOM AT THE TOP, Melfort Village, by Kilmelford Tel:  01852 200345 (6 miles drive).  This old gunpowder village was converted into a time share village and the restaurant is run by an excellent chef (he makes the best scallop dish I have ever had).  Every Monday evening is “Music Evening” – this is an informal, spontaneous, “ceilidh” style music evening - if you’re a musician take along your instrument.  All musicians, singers or just listeners are welcome.

LUCY'S, Ardfern Tel:  01852 500781 (6 miles drive).  In the heart of this pretty marina village, the Crafty Kitchen serves delicious, home made meals at a reasonable price.

THE CUILFAIL HOTEL, Kilmelford Tel:  01852 200274  This former coaching inn is one of the oldest hotels on the west coast.

A little further afield, you may like to try the Kilmartin Hotel, Kilmartin Museum Restaurant, The Tayvallich Inn, The Tayvallich Coffee Shop or the Cairnbaan Hotel.  Oban has a good selection of eating places ranging from take-aways to fine dining.  There is less of a choice in Lochgilphead.
