New Resource CD Available

Our colleagues at the West Glamorgan Artchive Service have put together a terrific resource disc.  If you like maps then you will love this CD.  Move around Victorian Neath and explore the town in detail with ease.  Find those elusive long demolished streets in a single click.

Then, if you want to see the map 'in the flesh' then drop in and see it at our archive.

The CD is available to purchase either in Neath at the Neath Mechanics' Institute or in Swansea from the West Glamorgan Archive Service.

Priced at £9.99p it is a great gift for any local history enthusiast.  Below is a description of what the CD contains and some screenshots.

About the CD

We have digitised Victorian Ordnance Survey maps of Neath made in 1877 and made them into this interactive resource CD. It includes maps at 1:2500 (25 inches to a mile) and the special large-scale town maps at 1:500 (1014 feet to a mile), showing the town and surrounding area in detail.

It will work with your internet browser to enable you to navigate around the map.

  • Zoom in to the map to see each property in detail or out to view the whole town.
  • Pan left, right, up and down to follow a street or find a property.
  • Use the street index to find a place, street or building named on the map and go straight to it.

The resource CD also includes:

  • Information about how the map came to be made and what it tells us about Victorian Neath.
  • Copies of some Neath trade directories for the 1870s.
  • A key to the symbols used on the map.
