Fort AugustusDetails of panel at Fort Augustus Monastery before cleaning. | Fort AugustusAfter cleaning and awaiting a mortar repair | | Fort Augustus Detail before cleaning | After cleaning | | Torn lead framing of Dornoch Cathedral window. | The lower half of the window in Dornoch Cathedral North Porch was ripped out by a vandal. The panel was removed and a new section grafted on to the existing lead. | | Church of Scotland Beauly. Subsidence has caused the window opening stonework to pull away from the window panel. The panel is a zinc lattice type. Several solder joints have been torn away from the frame. Twisting and bowing and loss of glass has occurred. | I devised a cunning plan to remove the panels safely single handed. A small pulley was affixed to the stonework above and a rope payed through the panel ( 3 pieces of glass removed) took the weight as the mortar(cement) was chipped away. Then when the panel was loose it was lowered safely to the ground. This picture shows the lower panel similarly treated. | | East Cromarty Church 18th Century glass repairThe cracks had propagated from the rusting steel screw in the sash catch. This image shows the signature of the glazer D.Gair. The small pieces were edge bonded as was the longer crack. There was enough flexibility in the glass, which is only 1.00mm thick to allow deflection which allowed the glue to penetrate. Putty was used to hold the small pieces in situ. The excess glue was carefully removed with fine steel wool after being allowed to harden for 24hrs.. | East Cromarty Church 18th Century glass repairThe repair is largely hidden by a fresh putty bead. This precious piece of glass is saved. | | East Cromarty Church 18th Century glass repairThis crack was in an adjoining pane. The glass was carefully deflected enough to allow the glue to penetrate. The glue hardens in Ultraviolet light so the insertion was done under electric light. | East Cromarty Church 18th Century glass repairA detail of one of the big arched windows. The panes taper to a fine and very fragile point to which this lump of putty was firmly adhered. The old corrupt putty was gently eased away leaving the old thin glass ''floating'' | | East Cromarty Church 18th Century glass repairThis pane has a crack running half way across. Any heavy handedness would see it propagate across the pane. The crack was glued with UV setting glass bond then a thin lace of putty was eased around and under the free edges to give it support. It was allowed to firm up for 3 days before any attempt was made to complete the putty fillets. | East Cromarty Church 18th Century glass repairThe new putty fillets are shaped to form a chute which will allow water to flow off readily. Damage to the glass had been caused in the past by water lying in the recess and then freezing. | | | | |
Northern Light Stained Glass
I have recently taken over at Northern Light Stained Glass, Katewell, Evanton, Ross-shire. The previous owner Angus Cullen has retired. I have worked with Angus since 2001. Projects include Ness Bank Church Inverness, St Andrews Fortrose, Tain Parish Church, The Highland Club at Fort Augustus Monastery (with LDN Architects) East Cromarty Church, Coxton Tower Llhanbryde (with LDN and Laing Traditional Masonry) ,Dornoch Cathedral and Church of Scotland Beauly.
. I have a commissioned memorial window in Glencoe.
I can offer specialist advice and technical expertise in matters of restoration, conservation, repair, cleaning and protection of all types of leaded glass also wood and steel framed windows. Large panels can be removed, the opening securely boarded up and then rebuilt in the studio with new lead came frameworks using as much original glass as possible. Missing glass can be sourced to match closely to the original colour, tone and texture. Panels are refitted with new ties, painted bars and colour matched lime mortar. I pay great attention to detail and leave the site clean and tidy.
New panels can be designed and fitted. I welcome enquiries from Architects and Surveyors. I can visit sites to quote for a single pane to multiple window projects. I will also be happy to quote for discretely fitted (Church and Heritage approved) polycarbonate vandal proof screens.
