The MFEE

The Metropolitan Fire Engine Establishment was formed in 1883 byt the amalgimation of the principle Insurance Fire Brigades opperating in London at the time.  Its remit now included all and any proerties in the geographical area of the County of London and was no longer confined to those insured by insured.

Whilst it was still a Private Fire Brigade, funded primarilly by the major Insurance Companies, it performed as a public service.

James Braidwood, from the Edingburgh Fire Engine Establishment, wasputin charge of theis new fire service and immediately introduced the first Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).  He institute a uniform that was fire resistant, water resistant and hard wearing and he outfitted his firemen with a new helmet made by Merryweather & Sons Ltd.
