In The Begining

We can speculate that the very first organised fire service for London was around AD100 and the Vigilles Urbanae (City Watchmen) who's duties included firefighting.

They were set up originally by the Roman Emperor Augustas in AD63, replacing a rather inaffective earlier force, the Triumviri Nocturni, made up of private slaves whi, it is said, put more effort into looting than firefighting.

The Vigilles were a part of the Roman Army and eventually every city occupied by the Romans for any lenght of time would have their own unit of Vigilles Urbanae.  They wore a uniform similar to the soldiers of the time, so those opperating in Roman London would have worn, what is now known as, the Imperial Gallic Type C helmet.
