'THOROUGHLY MODERN'

Tuesday 23rd February 2010

Meena Jatish Shah, qualified Judge & Demonstrator,  was our demonstrator for this meeting.

Meena explained that her concept was contemporary design, with the use of few fresh flowers, little or no foliage with emphasis on accessories.

Her first design accentuated the use of vine spheres which is quite the 'in thing' at the moment. If they are not too densely woven, placements can also be done within them. They also work as a mechanic. Lime green mitsumata sticks were also used. Mat-like creations fashioned from green giunco sticks and golden yellow zantedeschias completed the design:

The sides of her tray used in her second design were innovativley covered with pasta glued on. This design was inspired by the parallel/transparency style. Sisal which many floral artists now seem to have banished to the back of their cupboards made a comeback.

Aluminium wire is another trendy accessory and has umpteen uses. here it supports individual florets of Polianthes (tuberrose). Tall and over-sized glass containers which can accommodate a whole design within them are quite pupular especially for corporate floristry work. Ostrich feathers though expensive, if carefully stored, can be re-used repeatedly and instantly add panache and the wow! factor to any design.

Bamboo, agave leaf bases and a terracota pot were the basis of this design:

Abaca is another useful accessory when it comes to covering stands. The colour range grows vaster. Thick aluminium wire encloses space and adds a shiny texture. Meena again  used spheres here together with just a few flowers.

Strips of banana bark were neatly wrapped around an old rubber tyre:

Dried parasitic vines which grow over Neem trees in Mombasa were used to cover the stand here. Entada bean pods were added. A fence like construction which can be twisted into a spiral was suspended. It supports a single orchid stem.

Novice Class today was 'My Favourite Container' whilst Int & Adv members attempted 'Abrupt Change' in which dried plant material had to feature. Lydia Kangehte & Pravina Dilip Shah judged the competitions.
