ovooThis is an Ovoo (pronounced owoo) they are placed in significant and sacred plases. Such as on the summits of mountains or the tops of high road passes. When Mongolians visit these or pass by offerings are made for safe travel. On special occasions a silk scarf (khadag) is placed on the Ovoo.

That the land mass of England is 130,410 Sq Km, and the land mass of Mongolia's largest Aimag - Umnogobi is 165,400 Sq Km. Mongolia has 22 Aimags (Regions or Counties) and it's total land mass is 1,565,000 Sq Km. That makes Mongolia 9.5 times larger than England!

Mongolia is the Worlds Second largest land-locked country after Kazakhstan and the 19th largest country in the World.

The population density is less than 2 people per Sq Km, the least populated country in the World. Remember Greenland is part of Denmark, so therefore has a much higher population density.

Ulaan Baatar is the Worlds most remote capital city. It is also the capital city that is farthest from any sea.

The highest average atmospheric pressure (weather) system is centred over Western Mongolia each winter. The pressure reaches 1055 hPa in Ulaangom.

Mongolia has the Worlds most northerly desert - Buurug Eels in Uvs Aimag. Where it is parallel with the Southern parts of Canada! And, the Worlds most Southerly permafrost (in the Northern Hemisphere) in Bayankhongor Aimag.

Mongolia has probably the Worlds longest active surface fault line - the Bulgan Fault. On 23rd July 1905 a quake of 8.7 on the Richter Scale caused  fissures 60m deep and over 10m wide! For a distance of over 400 km.

The distance from Ulaan Baatar to its farthest Aimag capital is aremarkable 1,636 Km.

There are 11.2 livestock amimals per person in Mongolia!

Mountains cover 40% of Mongolia.

Part of the Worlds largest forest lies in Mongolia. The Siberian Taiga forest.

There are 33 types of 'Gobi' Desert.
