Mongolia is a huge country and there are very few roads. As soon as you leave Ulaan Baatar, you leave the tarmac behind. Once in the countryside the standard of 'road' varies considerably.

Although this is titled 'off road adventures' we tend to follow routes that have been driven before.

There are no decent 'road' maps so a GPS is essential.

Underwheel conditions vary as well. In one day you can be driving in the mountains on snow, sand, rock and river bed.

Driving in Mongolia is tough. VERY TOUGH. You have to be ready for any eventuality. And you can usually be sure it will happen!

We usually use the Russian jeep, they are much more robust than land cruisers or landrovers, additionally there are spares available all over Mongolia. A broken leaf spring or carburettor  is a minor issue, this can't be said for a more modern (more luxorious) vehicle.

Driving in winter is another possibility, although there are other safety concerns to be aware off.
