Mongolia is regarded as one of the safest countries
in the world to visit.

There are however a few common sense tips and hints to make your trip safer.

  1. Mongolia is a developing country, so learn a bit about the traditions, culture and language before your visit.
     
  2. You don't need any injections or innoculations to visit Mongolia. However it's best to visit your home GP and get a check up.
     
  3. Make sure you have good insurance policy which covers emergency medical evacuation and treatment. It must also cover all your planned activities.
     
  4. Mongolia is a tough country to travel in so you need to be fit and healthy.
     
  5. Visit the FCO website for up to date safety and security information. They also have a good system where you register your travel plans with them.
     
  6. When in Mongolia avoid shows of wealth and dress modestly.
     
  7. For youth group expeditions make sure you are familiar with the GWM Risk Assessment this outlines your responsibilities as well as the overall management of safety.
      
  8. Generally Mongolia is safe for women travellers and those travelling on their own.
     
  9. It's best to avoid ger areas of Ulaan Baatar after dark, especially if you are on your own.
     
  10. The following areas of Ulaan Baatar are renowned for petty theft and pick pockets:-
    Outside the central post office and in busy times, Sukhbattar Square.
    Outside the State Department Store.
    In and around the international Rail Station.
    And inside the black market (Khar Zackh).
