Pondering the new year

by Lisa says... - 13:39 on 12 January 2009

I've just returned from an indulgent birthday weekend. Birthdays are great and often underplayed, but never mine. Being born at this time of year means that, ever since I was aware of my birthday, I was determined to ring-fence the celebration and grab January 10th as my very own, ignoring the moans of 'Thank goodness we've survived Christmas and new year" and "January is SO miserable". Not for me!

Anyway, my birthday does give rise to thoughts of the next year and allows me to reflect on my achievements/ nightmares from my previous year.

Is my next step simply about consolidating and building on what is beginning to grow with the people I am lucky to work with OR is it time for me to push forward, move on and possibly, move away into a new realm?

I find it hard to find the balance between influence and impact - something I discussed with my lovely friend Marie on Friday. Anyway, that's what I'm working on now, through my work, as I work and when I work - the next few months are going to be about identifying that balance and deciding where, for the moment, I WANT to be in it. First, a definition is in order:

What do I mean by INFLUENCE?

What do I mean by IMPACT?

What is the relationship between the two?

How can I construct the right measure of inf & imp to ensure I see/ experience the achievements I am hoping for?

Anyway. that'll keep me going for now.

An interesting development - my partner wrote a poem for a competition in 2000 which came fourth and was then published and then included in a BBC programme. We've just discovered that the excerpt from the programme with the poem being read has made it onto YouTube...interetsing to see what happens next - influence or impact? Anyway, the poem is below:
