ARNALLT OWEN 2 WOOD PAIRS TOURNAMENT 2024
In its second year, the tournament was once again a great occasion for the club in memory of a much missed Life Member and excellent bowler Arnallt Owen.
The number of entries had increased on the previous year from 30 to 35 with pairs entered from all over South Wales with some pairs travelling from as far afield as Cheltenham and Nottinghamshire.
The presentations were presided over by the Club’s Treasurer Colin Davies in the absence of the Chairman Nigel George who had unfortunately been laid low by Covid the previous day and had sent his apologies and best wishes for a successful day.
Colin also passed on Michael, Janet and Malcolm Owen’s apologies for being unable to attend that day and who had asked him to thank all the competitors for supporting their Dad’s memorial tournament and hoped that it would be as successful as the previous year.
He stated that the standard of bowling throughout the day had been at a very high level and it was pleasing to see so many young bowlers taking part and doing exceptionally well.
The eventual winners of the main tournament and £500.00 first Prize were Gary Davies and Colin Jones M.B.E. (former Commonwealth and European Welterweight boxing Champion) of Loughor Bowling Club who defeated Paul Griffiths and Robert Chisholm of Parc y Dre Bowling Club, Llanelli in an entertaining and closely fought final.
The Plate competition was won by Paul Diment and John Roberts of Tenby B.C. who defeated Robert Davies and Mair Evans of Carmarthen B.C. by one shot in another excellent final.
He congratulated all the finalists on their achievement and expressed the Club’s thanks to all the competitors and supporters that had attended during the day.
He welcomed the Town Mayor Cllr, Emlyn Schiavone and his wife Tina the Mayoress who assisted with the presentations.
He also wished to record the Club’s thanks to all the sponsors without who’s support the event could not take place, namely Arnallt Owen’s Family, Compressor Solutions Ltd. of Pontardulais, Carmarthen Town Council, Castell Howell Foods Ltd., All Pump Services Ltd., of St. Clears, Colin Smith and Ivan Brooks (Club Members)
He thanked all the Club Members that had helped ensure the whole day was a success i.e. those who helped prepare the Green, the Groundsman Colin Smith, Jon Morris and Wynne Rees for Umpiring, those that helped behind the bar and of course the ladies who had worked tirelessly throughout the day providing teas coffees and snacks.
He concluded by wishing everybody a safe Journey home.
On behalf of all 70 competitors and the supporters that attended that day Gary Davies of Loughor B.C. wished to thank Carmarthen Bowling Club and its members for putting on such a successful Tournament in memory of one of their longest serving members. He alsothanked Colin Davies for all his hard work in organising and ensuring the smooth running of the tournament.
