The weather forecast was intermittant showers throughout the day, which we didn't see. Our first ray of sunshine was the official greeting to the club by Colin, with a broad smile, a hearty welcome followed by a bacon sarnie we were all in the mood. He also acted as Marshall giving sound advice on all difficult holes, but said nothing about the need for an iron lung after hole 3! Nonetheless, we haven't experienced such a sincere greeting before and it says much about the club. |

After 6 holes I felt as though I had played 12! The first 6 holes are grueling with hole 3 nicknamed, "Cardiac Hill.
I again had the pleasure of accompanying the winner, and must say I find Chris's approach to the game exemplory; to the rules, to high levels of etiquette and a determined focused player with a lot of talent. You don't have to pay me for this Chris, I'm sure all your friends in the association and beyond would agree. Needless to say, after a cracking year Chris is out front in the Player of the year, but by a narrow margin that can easily be wiped out. Sam Bradbury lies a close second and I long for the day I can write something about Sam, I could write a book. He lobbed his lob wedge after a bad stroke and it stuck in a tree, enough said for the moment, but come on Sam it's within your grasp, just Telford to go!
The greens were excellent and the course generally well looked after, testiment to a good grounds crew. The back 9 were considerably more genteel than the front, for which I was grateful. The more hardened members thought them a little bland, but I for one was glad to have the ball at the same level as my feet and not be breathless walking the fairways. Which reminds me of seeing Spanner on the front nine walking a fairway hill (I'm not sure why his ball was no where near) that later nearly killed me, and he was smoking a fag. They say smoking affects your fitness don't they? Another area where Spanner is an enigma!
We sat down to a good meal afterwards and I must say this is a facet of our society days that I wish we did more of. To stay together like this after a game and have a few drinks and lots of laughs is surely what we all want isn't it? The only things wrong were, I didn't order Prawn Cocktail and Stocksy ate the only salad. Otherwise a top venue and a great day.
