HISTORY OF REFLEXOLOGY

Evidence of inscriptions were found in ancient Egypt in a physicians tomb (Ankhm'ahor) at Saqqara. This evidence in the shapes of pictures and words leads us to believe that reflexology was practised as early as 2330 B.C. In Egypt, Dr Joe Shelby-Riley maintains that this healing was spread to Egypt via the Roman empire and was practised widely across the ancient world. It is not clear what the exact relationship between the art that was practised by the Egyptians and Romans to the Reflexology that we practise today but we do know that some form of practise with feet and hands was widely used.

It is thought that a form of Reflexology was practised in ancient India with Buddha and the Hindu philosophies. When the Buddhist monks migrated to China, Japan, Korea, Tibet and Vietnam a form of foot massaging and healing can be traced. The Chinese already had their own form of foot healing and along with the Buddhist there came about the Indian Foot Massage techniques. The Chinese also used acupuncture using longitude lines believing these were in line with the body's energy system. The Japanese used a form of pressure instead of needles as the Chinese did. Hard pressure applied by thumbs and fingers was used in a similar way to the Chinese. The ancient Chinese used different types of acupressure, from very gentle to deep massage and thumb pressure.

WHO CAN ENJOY REFLEXOLOGY?

Reflexology is suitable for most adults but there are certain conditions where the treatment should be avoided.  The initial consultation with your therapist will determine your suitability and in some instances GP consent may be required before Reflexology treatment can commence.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A REFLEXOLOGY TREATMENT?

A typical Reflexology session will last for approximately one hour and is normally practised upon the feet (hands and ears can also be used for Reflexology).  You will remain fully clothed, removing only shoes and socks and will be asked to relax upon a reclining chair or treatment plinth.  Feet will be cleansed at the beginning of the treatments and reflexololgy techniques will then be used adapting as and where is necessary.
