The sensory hairs on the club antennae enable the beetle to locate rotting flesh at a great distance. Here you can see the mites it carries that hitch a lift to the next food source.

and is usually dug in when a few inches tall, however insects and especially bumble and honey bees love the nectar it produces and this patch was left to grow on my allotment for this purpose.
