TOO MANY COOKS - Gazette 28 April 2010 The Riverside Bar and Restaurant owner is now selling the business... because he's fed up with losing his chefs.
The last straw for Andy Boyle (32) was when Paul O'Malley quit his post after just six months to move to a top Glasgow restaurant. For Paul was the third Riverside chef to jump ship since Andy bought the property in late 2008. So Andy decided to close the Kirkfieldbank business which he has completely refurbished including the famous restoration of an Alasdair Gray mural in just over two weeks time. "Deciding to close on May 14 was a difficult decision," Andy said. "But it's just not viable for me to keep going, given the number of chefs we're going through. "Although I'm angry with previous chefs for leaving, I'm not angry with Paul because he's a good-natured guy who told me that he'd kick himself if he didn't take this chance to move on. "The decision to close is nothing to do with a lack of customer numbers. "It's the fact that losing chefs is commercially restrictive for us. We feel as if we're a training centre for chefs." Andy has instructed the Glasgow office of leading licensed business agents, Christie + Co, to sell the Riverside Bar and Restaurant for offers over £250,000. "I'm not looking to make money out of this," Andy said. "That asking price will give you some idea about what was spent on upgrading this place. "It would be better if the Riverside had a hands-on operator. The owner's role would much better suit someone who is a chef-cum-bar manager." Before Andy took over 14 months ago, the Riverside had previously traded as The Tavern. It had been closed since 2007. Andy undertook a complete refurbishment of the property. The property hit the headlines when, during its refurbishment, a stunning wall-length mural by renowned Scottish author and artist Alasdair Gray was found, hidden beneath many layers of wallpaper. The mural, which had been originally painted in 1969, had suffered some damage due to its neglect over the years but was restored to its former glory by the original artist in 2009. Riverside Bar and Restaurant provides a 40-cover restaurant as well as the lounge bar which can seat approximately 30 customers, with the focal point in the bar being the spectacular mural. Jonathan Clough, Associate Director of Christie + Co, who is handling the sale, said: "Our client has decided to sell Riverside Bar and Restaurant to concentrate on another business opportunity. "The sale provides a tremendous opportunity for a chef proprietor/ husband and wife team to take over a business which is still very much in its infancy and that also offers huge growth potential. "It has painstakingly been designed and fitted to an exemplary standard so a new owner can simply take over and start trading immediately. "It has the added advantage of spacious owner's accommodation above. I envisage a lot of interest in the sale. "Given its picturesque location and artistic connections, the sale provides not only a business opportunity but a tremendous lifestyle opportunity." Carluke and Lanark Gazette
