A case of letter boxes

A comment about a head dress that scares little children - a reader asks should it have been said.

Boris Johnson stated that the burka worn by women looks like a letter box, a comment that has hit the headlines.

This is a subject another reader mentioned earlier this year, stating that the burka scares little children and added that it is banned in France and more recently in Belgium.   In actual fact it is also banned in eight other countries.

France was the first European country to ban the burka in public. It started in 2004, with a clampdown on students in state-run schools displaying any form of religious symbol. But in April 2011, the government went further by bringing in a total public ban on full-face veils. President Nicolas Sarkozy saying they were “not welcome” in France.

Women can be subjected to 150 euro fines and instructions in citizenship for breaking the ban. Anyone who forces a woman to cover her face risks a 30,000 euro fine.
