Birdwatch - Woodpecker

Following the interest by our readers' on garden birds, we present this feature from Mike Davies

Great Spotted Woodpecker juveniles have red foreheads that are replaced by black as they moult in the autumn.
Adult males then have a red nape but females have no red on their head at all and all these differences in plumage are easy to see.
Many Garden Bird Watchers enjoy working out exactly which Great Spotted Woodpeckers are coming into their gardens, male female or juvenile?
They have been visiting my garden for the last 9 years, always a pleasure to see them, they arrive mainly in the autumn, to spring, this year they have arrived early.
