Appeal for unity

The referendum campaign highlighted some ugly, divisive, and exaggerated rhetoric that featured prominently in both sides of the campaign. Project Fear was a central idea in both campaigns, and claims of economic or social collapse whichever way the vote went all contributed to this being one of the most painful campaigns I have personally witnessed. Rather than being a campaign of ideas - a campaign to show the merits, the potential, and possible future of a strong United Kingdom in or outside the European Union - we have been treated to a broadly meanspirited one.
