Neath Tramway

Wikipedia is wrong!

Quote: "Over the years, there have been 3 ways of powering trams - Electricity, Horses and Steam. But, if you think that's enough, then these are all split down into further categories. Electricity for example, has Trolley Poles, Bow Collectors, Pantographs, Stud Collector, Trough Collector, and Skate Collector!"

Wrong!  There were actually 4 ways of powering trams.  Not mentioned is the Neath GAS powered trams that ran from Briton Ferry to Skewen circa 1900's.    Coming soon will be an in-depth look at this and how the tramway united Skewen and Briton Ferry with Neath.

A reader's letter blames the start of the demise of Neath on the South approach road.   Do you agree?

In the early 1900's Briton Ferry and Neath both had their own gasworks, supplying the trams, home and street lighting as well as cooking.

In those days if you stuck your head in a gas oven (with the gas on) you would be a gonner.   Now, with present day gas, you can only blow yourself up.    Another illustration of how things change with the times.
