+ Danger of sewer gas explosion in Neath

+ Old Market Street - Water Street - danger of sewer gas explosion

Unless water seals are refreshed by those responsible for the drains in Old Market in Neath, there is a danger of a carelessly discarded cigarette butt causing a sewer gas explosion.

The poorly ventilated Victorian sewer in this area is currently causing offensive smells to pedestrians as they visit shops in this area.   The main cause, it is thought, is that sewer gas is leaking from the road drains.

Cllr David Lewis has informed us that the drains are responsibility of Welsh Water.   Many readers are of the opinion that the overall responsibility lies with the council

The NPT CBC councillors covering this area are shown right.

The Gnoll brook flows into the Water Street sewer and with the current dry weather the flow of water is diminished to the point of making the situation worse.

+  A blast from the past

reader with a sense of humour has sent us the following report - bearing in mind it would not be so funny if it happened in Neath when lighting a fag.

We are sorry we are unable to show the CCTV footage
