Twitter beyond Tom, Dick and Harry

Twitter followers - jumping on a publicity band wagon?

Being helpful and thoughful, two people sent up an 'account' on the Twitter website for Heritage Scene Neath.    At first the heritage team were delighted when the likes of Kev Johns (pictured) of Swansea Sound said they were followers.    However, lately it appears that those associated with firms of no significance are jumping on the band wagon, simply to get themselves known - a cheap form of publicity?

Its the old story, start something useful - then others jump on the band wagon.   Really it is a pity, the only ones to benefit are those who are behind Twitter.

The dilution factor comes into it, having those on board who are simply unrelated and just want their name mentioned.    One has then to wade through the names and sort out the wheat from the chaff.

There is nothing more straight forward, to our mind, than having a dedicated website for a firm, club or society and have it interactive with users - thus cutting out the dilution factor.

So is Twitter a passing fad?   It could very well be if any Tom, Dick or Harry wants his name mentioned - just for the sake of it.
