Meeting to 'Benefit' you

Report:  Neath Abbey Older Peoples' Forum

Held on Monday, 27th February 2012 at the Dyffyn Clydach Memorial Hall, Longford.

The forum has no geographical bounderies - as indicated by the large attendance from all neighbouring areas.

The meeting was hosted by Cllr Martyn Peters with no hint of any political influence - the Forum is strictly non-political.

The Welfare Right Unit of NPT CBC explained what benefits residents aged over 60 are entitled to, stating that many entitlements are going unclaimed.   The Unit is very proud of its record in helping older people and helping them to complete claims forms.  A Guarantee Credit benefit scheme exists to ensure that older people get additional benefits when needed.

Sian Morris of Safer Neath Port Talbot Partnerships gave a chat on home safety with even a brief mention on dog mess.  Sian made everyone feel comfortable by saying that we live in a low crime area - thanks to PACT meetings and the work done by PCSO's at grass root level.   However, efforts are needed by residents to avoid various scams, stating that if an offer is too good to be true - then it probably is.  Above all, never part with your Bank details to unproved sources - and banks themselves never ask for them, because they already have them.  Care on the Internet for youngsters was also mentioned - you should always be aware of what they are looking at.

Two members of Blaenhonddan Community Council were present and were asked if similar meetings could be arranged in other areas covered by their council.

The meeting ended with tea and biscuits and freebee gifts from Sian Morris - including handy BINGO markers.

A new home safety feature will shortly appear in our menu.  We were pleasantly surprised with the number of 'silver surfers' present, showing how changes are taking place in getting up-to-date information.
