Will the Empire be demolished?
The big question is will our councillors allow a building that can serve thousands in our community to be demolished for 12 social housing flats. The planning application to demolish the former Empire cinema will shortly be considered by NPT council. Below we show you the plans for the replacement.
Will it be another Neath eye sore and a 'White's Folly' like the site at Waunceirch? This has become the laughing stock by local residents who wonder why the NPT council allowed it to be built.
Residents have up until 13th December 2011 to have they say about the future of the Empire building, which, if demolished, could be another nail in the Neath town coffin.

We think the consultation period should be extended and that the application should not be rushed through by the NPT planing department. Apart from serving the community, this building has the potential of providing jobs in the area for many years ahead.

If you look at the Neath Empire website you will read about all the options for this building, including one that compares it to the Tower Ballroom at Blackpool. It is possible to make the Empire a similar attraction with enthusiasts prepared to provide their skill and know-how at no cost - just for the love of doing it. Similar ventures have been done elsewhere and have revitalized communities.
