Demolish the Empire?

Planning application submitted to demolish the Neath Empire Cinema / Bingo Hall

The Planning Department of Neath Port Talbot Council has received a planning application from Coastal Housing Association of Swansea to demolish the old Empire Cinema in the Rope Walk Neath to build 12 flats for social housing.

It is really sad that a building that is ready made for a community and youth centre, with fitness and cultural activities, capable of providing a much needed service for hundreds (if not thousands) of residents, should give way for just 12 flats.

Indeed, this will be a test for all NPT councillors to see how much they care for the community and the youth of today.    Once this building is demolished it will be an opportunity lost for ever.

However, you can have your say on the council website.   If you cherish your town and what it has to offer, you will surely want to say something BEFORE it is too late.

PS.... It is alleged that the freehold of this building can be bought for only £400,000 - a small drop on the ocean compared to the £2,000,000 spent on Victoria Gardens.    If a lottery grant was given towards that, then surely a grant can be given to convert the Empire to a community / youth centre to benefit the residents of Neath?    This is a ready made building waiting to serve the community.

Have YOUR say on the council website

It has been stated that the consulation period ends on 13th December 2011.   In view of the serious nature of this application, we think it should be extended for residents to be aware of it and for them to present their views.
