Shops Magnet

Waunceirch Shops - a magnet for youngsters

...But well behaved said a shop owner

Residents attending a recent councillor's surgery stated that the shops at Waunceirch, including the Tesco Express store which remains open until 11:00pm every evening, was like a magnet for youngsters.

Councillor Janice Dudley stated that local youths were not totally to blame because youngsters were gathering from other areas, including Skewen, Cimla and Tonna.

One resident stated that gangs of youths were very intimidating to elderly people and that their presence could effect trade at the shops, questioning the need for Tesco to remain open until such a late hour.

Another resident stated that Tesco should not be allowed to sell alcohol after 9:00pm.

Unless action is taken, the situation is likely to get worse when the Indian 64 seater restaurant opens in the near future.

Councillor Dudley that the Police are aware of the situation.

A Positive Note  When we asked the management of Piper's Fish Bar about youngsters gathering in the evenings, they said that they were no trouble and in fact were well behaved.   They were said to be polite and after eating outside the shop they put the wrappers in the bins provided.   However, it was agreed that crowds of youngsters could appear intimidating to elderly people - especially late at night.
