Charlotte De Vere is the latest skeleton to begin to emerge from the De Brassey cupboard. She was born into the wealthy De Brassey family in 1632, the second daughter, and destined for a "good" marriage. That is until she met a handsome actor, William De Vere, whom she fell madly in love with.

They married in secret and when her family found out she was immediately disowned and disinherited. Her new husband, who had married her for her money and the prospect of an easy life, deserted her straight away.

In her search to earn a living she becomes an actress and teams up with Nell Gwyn, this is at a time when being an actress is not a respectable profession.
