 World War II

"There is a war on you know"

It is 1942 and these words ring out across the land, as women are asked to 'do their bit' for the War Effort.

Lady Atherton, regional representative for the W.V.S. has come to address a group of ladies keen to find out about the latest campaign, 'Make Do & Mend'.

This light-hearted talk is a trip down memory lane for those old enough to remember and an opportunity to marvel at the ingenuity of the women in war torn Britain. There is much to inspire in Lady Atherton’s talk.

Lady Atherton brings with her a fine collection of clothing to show the ladies and inspire their creativity.

'A woman’s work in never done!'

Its 1945, the war is over and Lady Atherton has come to address representatives from the local groups involved in fighting the war on the Home Front. They reflect on what has happened over the last 6 years and consider what the next 6 years hold in store.

She looks back at the work of the W.V.S. since its formation in 1938 and reveals the ups and downs of starting what would become an enduring institution.

An entertaining tribute to the ingenuity and work of these unsung heroes of WW2 and an inspiration to us all.
