Renny Tailyour Final 2010
05 August 2010

The last time the Hope Paton won the Renny Tailyour Trophy was in the 1960s. On Wednesday night at Brechin Parkview BC it looked like the wait for another victory might be over as they led for most of the match. However, their opponents, Drumlithie BC had other ideas and they knew when to deal their aces in the match.

After twelve ends it was seven shots all, and the weather had gone from beautiful sunshine to steady rain, with a full rainbow framing the green.

As the rain continued the Hope Paton rink lost their way and Drumlithie seized the opportunity to come back and tie the match.

One last effort from the Hopey saw them take a two at the thirteenth end to regain the lead, but then disaster struck.

At the fouteenth end skip Brian Mackie saw his last bowl pick up the jack only to see it agonisingly stop next to a couple of Drumlithie bowls. This would have tied the match once more, however, the opposition skip, who had played well, came in with his final bowl of the end and picked up the jack to count five and give Drumlithie the lead for the first time in the match.

This was bad enough, but without time to recover the Hopey lost what proved to be a decisive four at the next end and trailed by seven shots with two ends to play.

Although they managed to pull three back, a four was needed at the last end to tie the match.

As you can tell from my report it never happened, and Drumlithie finshed off the final with two more shots at the last end to win the trophy by nineteen shots to twelve.

Well done to both teams for an entertaining final, and to the lady who kept us warm with a nice hot cup of tea and some tasty biscuits.
