Steven Duncan New Green Champion
03 August 2010

Steven Duncan became the Green Champion for the first time when he defeated Ron Blacklaws in this year's final 21 - 15.

After winning the first two ends with single shots Stephen quickly found himself  6 - 2 behind to the more experienced Ron Blacklaws who put together a three end run to take the lead and remind Stephen that this was the Green Championship Final.

In response Steven won the next jack , and changed to a longer jack which Ron couldn't match. He quickly turned things around and put together a run of ends to race ahead 15 - 6.

The next few ends were shared and Stephen leading 17 - 9 looked good to take the title. Once again Ron had other ideas, won the next end, shortened the length and suddenly it was a new game with the score at 17 - 14 after Ron won the next three ends.

Stephen replied to make it 20 - 14 and looked to have won it at the next end, but Ron played a wonderful last bowl to win the end and make it 20 - 15.

The inevitable was only prolonged and Steven took the single he needed at the next end to win the Championship for the first time.

Ronnie Murray and Dave Pirie Take Green Championship Pairs Title

Success has come quickly to Dave Pirie playing his first final in this his first season at the club. He  was in good form alongside his more experienced partner Ronnie Murray to lift the Pairs Championship. Their opponents in the final were Harry Dunn and Eddie Main who just were no match for Dave and Ronnie on the night who ran out easy winners 20 - 4 after eleven ends.

John Dempsey Lifts David Silver

Finding his best form since his back operation last season John gave opponent Willie Pirie no real opportunities to get into his rhythm in slightly windy conditions. After checking each other out in the first few ends John found his weight consistently to score heavily and take a commanding lead 17 -9. The match finished two ends later with two 2s to John.

Wendy Is Ladies Green Champion

In gusting winds Wendy MacCallum completely blew away her opponent Ethel Norrie who wasn't able to catch her weight in the difficult conditions. Wendy was on form and ran out an easy winner 21 - 1.

Ron Blacklaws Lifts The Handicap Trophy

On a beautiful summer's evening, apart from the plague of greenfly, Ron Blacklaws won the Handicap Trophy against Ian Rose. This was an entertaining match with good banter between both players. Ian began the match with eights shots to the good with the handicap, but Ron quickly ate into that with two threes at the first two ends to quickly make it a close match at 8 -6.

The game went back and forward with both players claiming a four in their ends, before Ron gained the lead at 18 - 17. Two ends later it was all over with Ron winning 21 - 17.

Arthur Moir Wins The Andy Melrose Trophy

We had just watched the finish of the Handicap Trophy, and Willie Pirie was well up on Arthur Moir in the Andy Melrose when we were offered a cup of tea. We wondered if we would have it before the match was finished. We needn't have worried, what a game this turned into!

Willie as I said was well ahead, and it looked only a matter of time before it was finished in his favour. Up until then he was picking up shots at most ends as Arthur struggled with his weight.

Without reason Arthur began to come more into the match, being more accurate with his first bowl and scoring shots, until suddenly he was only a few shots behind. Willie rallied, and the score went to 19 - 14 in his favour. Those last two shots wouldn't come, and suddenly it was 19 - 18.

With Willie lying one shot, with one bowl to play to win the match, Arthur played his last bowl and somehow he was lying three shots for the title. A last tight bowl from Willie missed the head and the game was over. The crowd went home in disbelief at what they had just witnessed.

Willie Pirie Takes Vets Title At First Time Of Asking

Friday night saw the last final of the week and it was fitting that it was between Willie Pirie and Ron Blacklaws, who have both appeared in three finals this week.

The game started fairly evenly with both players scoring four shots each after four ends. The match was nearly halted by a heavy downpour but after a couple of ends it cleared up and the players treated us to some great bowls and a fair bit of hilarity.

The serious bowling began and there were some very good heads indeed from both players. Willie however took control and tonight he certainly found the consistency that missed out on the night before.

Ron really had no answer to him once he got into his flow and the game very quickly reached its conclusion as Willie once again got to nineteen shots and joked about being there before. This time however there was no mistakes and with one of the best shots of the match he drew round the bowls topick up the jack and gain the victory his play deserved.

A fitting end to a great week of bowls. Thanks to all the players who entertained, and to the spectators who helped make it a memorable occasion.
