Angus League - Top Five

In the new Angus
League - Top Five competition the Hope Paton Team lossed 2-3 to Baxter Park from Dundee.
Apart from Harry Dunn's game, he played an on form Paul LIndsay and lost 5 - 21, the other four matches were very close, and the result could have gone either way.

Willie Pirie was 2 - 8 behind in the early stages but came back to lead 11 -10, before falling back to 11 - 16. At 13 - 20 he looked to be out of it but  gave us hopes when he fought back to 18 - 20. Sadly he lost a single to give J. Dolan the match.

Dennis Machir looked to be our best bet always on top until the final stages. He held leads of 13 - 6 then 17 - 10 making us think it was just a question of time but his opponent, Dave Millar found his touch with a 2, 4, 1 run to level the match, and although Dennis gained another two shots, Dave picked up a single then another full house for a 22 - 19 win

Steven Duncan got off to a good start with a 6 - 0 lead, then fell behind at 7 -11. He then had a great 2, 3, 3 run to lead 15 - 13 and from then on it was anyone's game, but at 19 - 18 Steven gained two singles to take the match 21 - 18.

Ron Blacklaws had a very close  match with Pat Kearnan, both players taking the lead at various stages before Ron won the match 21 -18.

The Annual Ladies v Gents match was contested on Friday night, and for once the Gents won, 66 - 38 being the final result with Eddie Main, Wull Hendry and John Paton winning the sweepie.

Jim Donald Singles

The Semi Finals and Final of the
Jim Donald Singles took place at the Hopey this Monday with the following matches.

D Garvie ( MBC ) v James Thomson ( Hope Paton )
Scott Mather  v  P D Machir  ( Hope Paton ).
The Final is on Tuesday at 6.00pm.

In the first match David Garvie got off to the best possible start leading 7 - 0 after four ends. Although James Thomson began to claw back into the match, his more experienced young opponent scored more heavily in the ends that he won to go through to Tuesday's final.
The other game was a totally different match altogether with Dennis Machir eventually taking the other final place with a 21 - 20 victory.
Dennis started the stronger player and was soon 11 - 3 ahead, and looked very confident. Scott however, began a rivival after gaining the jack and changing the strategy of the length. This caught Dennis out for a while and the game was all equal at 14 - 14. Dennis then took the lead again, and leading 18 - 16 seemed to be in control. Again Scott struck a sucker blow, hitting him with a four to take the lead at 20 -18. The next two ends saw Dennis take two singles shots to tie the match 20 -20.

The last end saw Dennis hold on for that one vital score he needed to make Tuesday's final against David Garvie from Montrose Bowling Club.

Look out for the report on the final in next week's Review, and also on the Hope Paton website.
