Electrolysis and Wigs and Hairpieces.

One of the first considerations during your early or even before transitioning is dealing with your facial hair. If you can get your facial hair removal underway before starting your Real Life Experience, particularly if you have heavy and dark facial hair it will make the start of your RLE easier. A nice dress and a five a clock shadow is a definite no! no!

This can be dealt with by laser or EPL which is permanent reduction but will probably never completely eradicate facial hair, particularly light coloured hair.

A better alternative is electrolysis, which is permanent. It can be used for all hair types and skin colour, whereas laser will not work on light hair, particularly in combination with dark skin.

It is important to choose your operator carefully as damage to the skin and folicles can easily happen and cause pitting to the face.

ELECTROLYSIS.

An important part of transitioning is the removal of your facial hair and if you are going to have SRS, some of your genital hair.

Hormone therapy will not do this. It may slow and even soften the hair but not stop it.

Bodily hair may take on a much more feminine appearance and distribution. The only proven way to permanently remove facial and genital hair is by electrolysis.

Electrolysis must be approached with extreme caution. If it is not carried out properly it can cause pitting to the skin and some quite serious skin damage.

Facial Hair:

Erica specialises in treating transsexual women, is well qualified and totally understands our special needs. She has been carrying out this work for over 30 years.

The procedure is not painful but can be uncomfortable but Erica’s experience and professionalism keep the discomfort to a minimum.

It is advisable to get the majority of your facial hair removed before you go for your reassignment and any facial surgery. No matter how good a job you have done of feminising, a five-a clock shadow will get you read. Also, electrolysis, softens the features along with the hormones, so as you progress, your requirements for Facial Feminisation Surgery may change.

Genital Electrolysis:

Nearly all adults have genital hair, so selective hair removal for your reassignment surgery is important before the operation as it is very difficult or even impossible to remove it from inside the vagina, afterwards.

Selective pre-operative SRS, hair removal by electrolysis can significantly improve the outcome, making your life as comfortable and complication free as possible, reducing the risk of post operative problems. These include pain and ulceration from hair balls in the new vagina, leading to infection and unpleasant discharge or the cosmetically unsatisfactory appearance of hair growing out of the vagina and/or clitoral hood.

Ideally genital electrolysis should be started about nine months before surgery and finished two weeks before. If there is any re- growth this should be very fine hairs and not cause a problem.

The advice of a leading UK SRS Surgeon is that ‘genital hair removal is appropriate and the area that requires to be treated is the base of the penis and all of the scrotum and about 6mm beyond. It is important to choose the practitioner carefully as scarring could compromise the surgery’.

Erica uses the State of the Art Computer controlled electrolysis. This system is quicker and far less uncomfortable than the old system.

How it works:

A higher voltage but for a much shorter duration and measured in micro seconds, is applied to the hair follicle. This insertion is by a very fine needle, inserted alongside the hair. When the base of the follicle is reached the computer, automatically discharges and destroys the follicle. It is then easily removed with tweezers.

The old system, which is still widely used, is a manual system. The method of operation is similar, using a fine needle, inserted alongside the hair.

Where it differs is a lower voltage and a much longer discharge, possibly for half a second or more. You can feel the follicle heating with a painful burning sensation. When to discharge, the operator judges that she has reached the base of the follicle, she manually discharges the electrolysis, with a button on the tool or a foot pedal. There is a higher risk of skin damage, much scarring and pitting.

Often the needle goes too deep and penetrates the base of the follicle or is discharged too shallow; too high a voltage can explode the follicle. All three can and often does, cause permanent damage.

However, this will not happen with Erica’s experience and more finely tuned machine.
