Comments: My husband's ancestor, Mary was born in 1806 in Gibraltar. She married James Whitworth (b. 1804 Haywood,Heap,Lancashire, England), raised a family and worked in the cotton mills in Heywood/Heap, Lancashire, England. Their son James was born about 1833-1837 in England. 1837 seems to be when marriage records start to be kept in England. She died in 1892. Any ideas how I can find out Mary's surname?

Comments: It would appear that many of us have Gibraltar connections somewhere. My (wife's) connection is with Edward John Blount and his descendents. Edward John it seems was born Tangiers about 1812 and maried Francesca Barlona in Gibraltar about 1835. Of the 10 children born (mentioned in a will) several ended up in England including Ferdinand (b. Gibraltar c1841)and it is from him that Viv is descended. Does anyone know what happened to George Evans Vernon Blount; Louisa Blount; Henry Augustus Blount; Charlotte Blount or other members of this family? Edward John was son of Webster and Eliza Blount. The name Barlona appears to be somewhat contrived so was she an Italian who jumped ship? A number of years since I last visited the Rock. I first passed through in 1960 on the SS Nevasa on the way to Singapore. Any Blount connections welcome. With thanks Peter

Obituary: MARY AARON McLAUGHLIN, 94, of POINT PLEASANT, NEW JERSEY USA.
E-Mail:

Comments: MARY AARON McLAUGHLIN, 94, of POINT PLEASANT, NEW JERSEY USA. Mary Aaron McLaughlin, died Thursday, April 6, at her home. Born Maria Antonia Aaron, June 26th 1911, Gibraltar. Daughter of Francis and Angela Aaron nee Martinez. The family resided in those early years at Rosia Cottages and at 10 Castle Road, Imossi Building. Mary's father, Francis Aaron, immigrated to the USA in 1913 in search of a better life for himself and his family. His wife Angela and six children followed him in 1914 in the SS Ultonia. (SS Ultonia last crossing was the 27th June 1917, she was torpedoed and sunk by the German Submarine U53 with the loss of one life). Mary was only 3yrs old when she arrived in New York and like most Gibraltarians she spoke fluent in both languages, English and Spanish and Yanito, which she would use in later years in New York as an interpreter among other careers. Mary was an extremely outgoing woman, she was loving, caring and always willing to help others. She was athletic and a champion swimmer. A self-taught Yoga Practitioner well before Yoga became mainstream. Mary opened her own Yoga studio late in life when she was in her 60s, she was always inviting friends and family to her house for Yoga sessions. She could do headstands until she was 87. She was very inspiring and encouraging to others. She was always a doer and very versatile. Even before she took up Yoga she liked to read about health, vitamins and how the body worked, constantly learning and trying out new remedies. She also taught Yoga at Trenton State and Georgian Court Colleges, New Jersey, for many years. Like most Gibraltarians, her home was always open to people in need, she used to say mi casa es su casa. Mary never forgot her Gibraltarian heritage, always talking about calentita in addition to other local recipes and customs she had learned from her mother. She visited Gibraltar in the 70s and 80s, made some good friends down Main Street and became a proud registered Gibraltarian at the age of 74. Mary passed away peacefully in the company of her daughter Marie. Marie lived and worked in Gibraltar for a number of years at the ICC Toyland Store/Casemate's selling soft toys. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Beverly Joseph McLaughlin, in 1955 and a son, Beverly Joseph McLaughlin Jr. Surviving are two daughters, Irene Fritsky and her husband Robert and Marie A. Ullger and her husband Lionel: a son, Thomas McLaughlin and his wife Sherry: 12 grandchildren and 4 g-grandchildren.

Comments: My maternal greatgrandmother,Annie Derbyshire, was born in Gibraltar in about 1858 to mother, name unknown, and father James Derbyshire. She married Thomas Wall sometime between 1881 and 1884 (I think) and had two children by him, both born in Liverpool: John about 1881. and Alice about 1884. I, with the help of the GRO(overseas department)in the UK and the CSRO in Gibraltar, have been unable to find a birth certificate for Annie, and I have not, therefore, been able to establish her mum's name. Similarly, the UK BMD indexes have not thrown up a pairing of Annie Derbyshire and Thomas Wall in the period 1880-1890 - so which of the hundreds of Thomas Walls out there was my greatgrandfather? Does any one out there have any leads which might help me get over my Derbyshire/Wall brickwalls?

His servant was Manuel Delprado, my great-great-great-great grandfather. He was born in Spain, possibly around 1792. He stayed in NSW and married Ellen Casey. They had lots of children, who in turn had children and I am a descendent. I would love to found out where he was actually born, and who he descends from. Also, there are quite a few cousins who are eagerly waiting news too right across Australia, from Perth to Sydney. Many thanks in anticipation. We have our Australian family tree structure, with entries in all generations, of course there are some gaps within each, but we can get back as far as Manuel. Comments: I am looking for the origins of my branch of the Martinez family in Gibraltar. So far I have discovered that my paternal Grandfather, Abelardo Martinez, was born in Gibraltar on 20 September 1889; his father Juan Martinez, also a native of Gibraltar, was a policeman and was married to Dolores Herrera of San Roque and died in Gibraltar on 17 March 1917. His grandparents were Manuel Martinez who was married to Maria del Carmen Macias. I visited Gibraltar last year for the first time in 40 years (I was born and live in London) and met Fred Ryan of the cemetary who was extremely helpful. However, I was unable to do the necessary research at the Cathedral, (I was able to establish that Juan does not have a birth certificate but may have a baptismal record). If anybody has done some research that could help me further I would be very grateful.

However, I have not been able to trace the birth place of his parents (Father: Francisco Asquez, Mother Catherina/Catalina Sanchez) or any of his siblings (if any). Is there anyone out there that can help? I am also interested in hearing from other people with the Asquez surname who live outside Gibraltar.
Follow-up: March 16th 2005.

Hi Lionel, Fay Napoli is working on my family tree (Asquez surname). The first born Asquez in Gibraltar was an Emmanuel Asquez in 1826 however, this was confirmned by his marriage certificate rather than birth details (no record of an Asquez being born in the 1820's). Therefore I still don't know where my ancestors came from. It looks as if more research needs to be done and I was wondering whether you would be kind enough to suggest someone or somewhere I can turn to help me with this quest. I have other infomation regarding this first Asquez which may or may not build up a picture. Would be grateful if I could hear from you. Thanks Damian Asquez.

Jane (might also be Jone, Josephina or Josepha)was the widow of a Robert Lancaster, another soldier. Jane gave her father on one record at Peter Suarez and on another as Joseph Suarez. Family legend has it that her grandfather lived just inside one of the gates of Gibraltar. She is believed to have had a sister whose name is not known. There is some suggestion that the family were all baptised in the cathedral at La Linea. I should very pleased to hear from anyone who might recognise these conenctions and will reply to any messages. I believe the name Suarez is not too commonplace in the Gibraltar and La Lina areas. Comments: I am a 48 year old woman from Norway with strong interest in Gibraltar because I might have relatives there. Just listen to this: The brother of my tripple grandfather (I think it`s called), named Torjus Guttormsen Berge, was the oldest son of his parents and was to take over the family farm here in the southern part of Norway. However, he moved to Gibraltar, married and got children. He wrote a letter to his parents in Norway, saying he was so content in this country, he wanted to stay and gave up his claim to the farm. We still have this letter, dated the 14th of February 1805, where he tells that he "has great pleasure of his countrymen" and also that there had been so many sick people that more than 5000 had died. At the time of his letter, he had three girls, named Margrethe Anne, Charlotte and Ema Relica. He undersigns the letter with his name and "Commissioner in Gibraltar". If he had not given up his farm to his younger brother, the destiny of many people would have been different. The situation for me, is that I am the first female inheritant to this little farm. I would be very much obliged if someone could help me to find out whether some of your Gibraltar inhabitants might be related to me? Or maybe give me an address where to ask.
Yours sincerely Siv Berge Lian Hannevik Terrasse 54 4613 Kristiansand Norway.

Hi Siv,

Thanks for the contribution. I have never come across the name "Guttormsen Berge" however, there is a name that might be of interest to you and that is "Borge.? The name Berge might have been corrupted over the years to Borge, who knows? I hope this lead will get you started with your adventure in Gibraltar Genealogy. If you search this site you will find many other links to Gibraltar Genealogy related sites that might be of help. Happy Hunting.

Strangely, his "Quality or Rating at the time of the Battle" is listed as "not found". My question is, could he have been garrisoned at Gibraltar? I understand that Victory stopped both going to and returning from the Battle of Trafalgar. That would explain why his name appears only for that "single" roll call. Forty-two years later, he applied for and received the Trafalgar "clasp" while he lived in Canada. Could he have been sent to the Victory from the prison as some type of working convict? Thank you!

Comments: Wrote to Maureen Newman as she listed a message on 2 Aug 2002 which is of great interest but have not had a reply. I wonder if any one else could help, please? "I have just read your message about Robert Wearing, merchant of Gibraltar.... I was browsing the site because an ancestor of mine died in Gibraltar and we have not been able to find out exact when he died so I thought if I looked at a Gibraltar site I might get some clues. However you mentioned a Christopher Hammond Wearing; he is related by marriage to the family I am researching so I hope you will not mind if I contact you in case you have come across my ancestor or could shed any light on his fate. David Galbreath , merchant of New York and Islington, London was a son of Thomas Galbreath , merchant of Islington by his probable first marriage ( We think he may have been married before that ). Thomas had married secondly on 2 February 1794 at St Mary, Reading, Berkshire, an Elizabeth Augusta Crawford. Their daughter, Augusta, bap. 26 July 1795 in Islington married C H Wearing on 11 July 1816 at St Clements Dane, London. Augusta was therefore a half-sister to David. David Galbreath was in Gibraltar on business in late 1811; we think at that time he was acting as an agent for another company. From 1794 he had been listed in directories as a merchant in the City of London but we think he may have had a change in his circumstances about 1810. He died in Gibraltar after 6 January 1812 and before 12 February 1812. He had caught a chill on arrival in Gibraltar in December due to unseasonal rainy weather. Ref letter from DG to his son John, 6 January 1812. He was buried in the Burying grounds within the the walls of the town at South Port, Gibraltar. Ref letter from David Johnston of Archbold and Johnston to James Dunsmore of Lothbury Street, London, 10 February 1812. Permission had to be procured for the burial to take place. The Gibraltar archivist searched his records for me but was unable to find a record of the burial and the cemetery no longer exists. David had been ill long enough that David Johnston had previously written to Dunsmore about him. David had made a recovery of sorts but had then become seriously ill - attended by Dr Fraser - water in the stomach and then on his lungs and had died after 2 days. Johnston had been very attentive and appeared to have made the arrangements for the funeral. Johnston hopes that Gray and Co will look after David's family. David did not speak of his own matters except for concern for his family and that there was money owing to him for the sale of some shirts. Johnston said he would deal with that and wrote to John on 11 April 1812 and enclosed a cheque for ?30..1s..9d. So we think Gray and Co were the firm David was working for. If your researches in Islington have thrown up anything that might be helpful to me I would be very grateful to hear from you. Thomas Galbreath's firm was at one time called Galbreath and Hendeson and there were trading connections with Scotland - Glasgow and family connections with Paisley." With best wishes Noreen Oliver

The Four Corners is what is known today as the Frontier or the area within the vicinity of the frontier. The Royal Air Force Officers Quarters is located only yards away from the border with Spain also known as Four Corners. I hope this might help solve the puzzle! Lionel

He would have been the governor at some time between 1827 and 1880. Thank you, Nicholas
Reply Date: Nov 13th 2003 Response from Nicholas: Dear Lionel, Hi How are you doing? Thanks for the reply. I think its really great that this service is starting up. I have high hopes and pray that I can find out what happenred to my ancestors in Gibraltar. I have found Sugden incidents there back into the 1700's. I don't know if they are all related but suspect they were. My Great Great Grandfather Selwyn Schofield Sugden the First was the Governor of a Penal Colony in Gibraltar in the mid 1800's. I would like to find out all that I can about the penal coloies in Gibraltar but can't find anything. What I believe went on is that convicts were transported by the Navy to Gibraltar on the way to Australia and other places, and that the penal colonies were run by the Navy. The legend is that the family were a Naval Family going way back. Sel#1's son Selwyn Schofield Sugden the Second, born 1836in Cornwall, England, was partially brought up at "the Rock". He became a Captain in the R.N. and his sons and many other descendants to this day are still in the Navy - U.K., U.S., and Canadian. The family are said to descend from the Earls of Orford, and were of a Class just below Nobility. The parents of Sel I are in the "Pallots Marriage Index", which is related for people with status. I have found family records for incidents in England until immigration to Canada in 1906. There is a big gap from 1849 to 1870. 20 Years, eh. I suspect that a lot happened in those twenty years in my great grand fathers emmidiate family and that cousins and siblings stayed and that there was a prior history of the extended Sugden family there. Maybe some are still there? If you could help point me in the right direction on any of these concerns I'd be very grateful. I am especially interested in B.M.D.records,and Naval Records. The biggest idea I got is that there may be some Library or Museum in Gibraltar with photos, portraits, and documents relating to Sel I's work as Governor of the Penal Colony. Thanks for working on this service! Yours, Nicholas L. Schofield Sugden

Comments: My great-great grandparents lived in Gibraltar from 1873 to 1880. James Rennie was born in Dundee, Scotland in 1840; while stationed in Bermuda as a sapper in the Royal Engineers he married (without leave of his commanding officer) Harriet Seon Outerbridge, a coloured woman born 1835 in Bermuda. They were immediately sent to Gibraltar, where Jessie Ross Rennie, Annie Rennie and David Ross Rennie were born in 1873,76 and 78, respectively. On 1st September 1875, he survived a gunpowder explosion at Calfe Battery. According to the family story, he was smoking while on sentry duty. His eyesight was damaged, which eventually led to his discharge in 1884. He was quite a character; according to his military record (1865-84) he spent much of his career in military prison. If anyone has any ideas about how I might find further information (maybe newspaper articles about the explosion), I'd be most grateful. best wishes, David Douglas, North Jutland, Denmark.

My great grandmother Rose Calori was born 4 -1865. Giacomo came to California in 1888 and saved for two years to bring Rose and her first child Mary to America in 1890. My grandmother, Genevieve was born 11-11-1891 and named after Genoa being the firstborn in SF, Calirornia. My great grandparents lived on a farm and could not read and write so when they left their family in Italy, they knew they would never hear from them again. We had a Moresco Family Reunion on 9-15-2001 and celebrated the Italian immigrant spirit. I would love to know more about their lives in Italy and to find any relatives. Rose Calori had a twin that may have died young. There has to be Morescos and Caloris over there. I hope to find info to share with our family.

Comments: Lionel,

Thanks for all. Let me ask you some things about Gibraltar Genealogy. I'm looking for information and doing some research on Minorcan families in Gibraltar. Is there any specific resource on Internet about this topic? I'm very interested to track all links between XVIII century Minorca and Gibraltar, and I thought 'The Rock Under a Cloud' book was an excellent starting point on this subject. Could you suggest me any other worth reading book? Thanks a lot and regards,

Martí
Always a pleasure Marti and hope that you enjoy your book. In answer to your question: according to British maritime records the existence of a maritime lane, military and commercial between Minorca, port Mahon and Gibraltar has been in place since 1708. Of course, it was more prevalent during the British occupation of Minorca. The Gibraltarian. The Origin and Development of the Population of Gibraltar from 1704 States that it was during this period that the arrival of most Minorcan artisans occurred. List of inhabitants 1777 taken by General Boyd states as 62 Minorcans among other inhabitants but in addition to this list there are 267 Strangers and 596 Natives. In my opinion, the actual count of Minorcans could have been much higher if we consider unknown numbers of those two groups. It is definitely a guide to go for but like any other official count, there is always room for error. The following is a Minorcan web site submitted by Susan at allgibraltar genealogy. allgibraltar genealogy is a highly recommended site for all those researching Gibraltar. http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/toflabalearic.shtml
Good luck and happy hunting.

Comments: Hi there, Found your site today and am really impressed with the ammount you have on it. My interest in Gibraltar stems from a marriage in 1818 at the Kings Chapel. George Langsford, Inhabitant, married Hannah Morecroft By Licence. They had two children, Sophia Allan and George Johnston, both baptised at Kings Chapel. On each baptism entry the fathers occoupation is given as Inhabitant. On the first they lived at Johnstons Passage and the second at Castle Road. George Langsford was said by his son to have been a Commissary General but I can find no evidence of this. I wondered if Inhabitant just meant someone of independent means who didn't work.Unfortunately try as I might I can't find out who would have issued the marriage licence, that might give me something else to go on. George Langsford was buried in Birmingham in 1825 aged 35years, giving a year of birth C1790. If anyone has any ideas on how I can continue my research I'd be most grateful to hear. Best Wishes Val Banks Staffordshire, England

I've been having trouble finding information about him as no records are available in Gibraltar--I was told by the Government that a census was not taking during the time he was there and church records had been destroyed in a fire for the period when he was born. He left Gibraltar, apparently in the employ of the Navy. When the ship landed in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, he deserted and made his way to Channel, Newfoundland. Here, in 1862, he was listed as a blacksmith. Any information related to tracking Naval records, or information on him would be appreciated. Comments: I am researching my Gibraltarian/English roots. My great grandfather, who was Englishman and stationed in Gibraltar around 1911 while serving in the British army. He married a Lala Balestrino in 1911 at Europa Barracks. He then went on to work as a dockyard policeman in 1914. His son Albert Harry Bishop my grandfather joined the British army too and served during the 2nd WW. He married a Lourdes Adamberry in 1935 they had six children. They were all evacuated to Ireland during the war. If anybody has any info on the above people or any ideas on how I can located information about them in Gib I would be extremely grateful.

Comments: My specific request involves a John Bruce, born in 1780 in Northumberlandshire England of Scottish parents. He reportedly married Margaret Ross Hutton in 1808 in Gibraltar. She was born in Gibraltar in 1784 , the daughter of an English Military officer. They then went to the USA to settle in Kentucky in 1810. Any suggestions you might have would be very much appreciated.

February 25, 2001. Hi Doug, Hope the following is of help to you. Gibraltar Register List of inhabitants February 1777. British Protestant Inhabitants: ?Bruce, John. Country of origin Britain, number of years of residence,1 year.? ?Hutton, James. Country of origin N. Britain, number of years of residence, 16 years.? ?Hutton, William. Country of origin Gibraltar. Any individual born in Gibraltar, number of years of residence is not shown in the register. ?To avoid tedious repetition of entries of persons belonging to the same family only the oldest person to bear the family name has been included, except where the countries or origin differs.? Source of information: The Gibraltarian by H. W. Howes Doug, this does not mean that there is no other Huttons in the registry. James Hutton could be Margaret?s father and William could be her brother and there could be others too. These addresses will be of help for a fee: Church of England, Cathedral of The Holy Trinity, The Vestry, Cathedral Square, Gibraltar. Civil Status & Registration Office, Government of Gibraltar, Registry of Birth, Deaths and Marriages, Joshua Hassan House, 3 Secretary's Lane, Gibraltar. Check The LDS web site, they have some info on Gibraltar too. http://www.familysearch.org/ Best regards and happy hunting! Lionel.

Comments: Any idea where I might be able to locate the names of ships that left Gibaltar in early 1865? From the book "Germans to America" my great-grandfather is listed as leaving from Gibaltar but to an un listed location. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, John
