1871, third quarter - July, August, September

Saturday, July 1, 1871. Maggie & I walked to Marshall’s & afterwards to the station to see Mary. Papa went down to Maidenhead. I went home after lunch Isabella & I went back.

Sunday, 2 July 1871. I went to church morning & evening.

Monday, July 18 71. I went with Maggie & Bella to Marshall’s sale.

Tuesday, 4 July 1871. Papa came home from Pinckney’s Green [Maidenhead]. I lunched with the’s & went to see Mrs Arnold.

Wednesday, 5 July 1871. I lunched with Mrs Child. Charlie & “R.S.” Charlie dined here.

Thursday, 6 July 1871 went out with Isabella. Mary, Lawrence & baby came to see us. Papa dined with Mr and Mrs child.

Friday, 7 July 1871 went out with Isabella. Left at 4.30 for the G.W. station. Charlie met me & we went down together to Pinckney’s green; met Mary at Boyne Hill Station [Maidenhead]. Had tea at 6.00 & went for a walk by Prospect Hill.

Saturday, 8 July 1871. Sat on the common. Charlie (St J.) [N.T.?]came down at 2.00 & we went in the pony chaise at 4.00 to Cookham. Fished on the River, started home at 8.00.

Sunday night July 1871. Wet morning & could not get to church. Took a walk over the common & across the fields. Went to Boyne Hill church in the evening. Charlie left us.

Monday, 10 July 1871. Sat on the common. Afternoon wet.

Tuesday, 11 July 1871. Left with Charlie by the 1.00 train. Mary came with us to the station. Arrived home a little before 3.00.

Wednesday, 12 July 1871. Went into

the town. Charlie dined with us.

Thursday, 13 July 1871. Went to a small party at Miss Ward.

Friday, 14 July 1871. Dr Quain[?] Came to see Isabella. Mary & Charlie came to see us in the evening.

Saturday, 15 July 1871. Auntie & Fanny came to see Isabella & I lunched with Mary.

Sunday, 16 July 1871 went to church morning. Mary Charlie came to see us. Went to hear the Bishop of Manchester at the Irish[?] church.

Monday, 17 July 1871 went into my district. In Sutherland Square.

Tuesday, 18 July 1871 Margaret came to see us. I went with her to call on Mrs Reade[?]. Mary & Charlie dined here.

Wednesday, 19 July 1871. Papa went to Brighton.

Thursday, 20 July 1871 Margaret. Mary came to see us.

Friday, 21 July 1871 had my photo taken at Websters. Went to see Mary. Isabella Rougemont came to see her & the Miss Bays.

Saturday, 22 July 1871 Mary & Charlie spent the evening with us.

Sunday, 23 July 1871. Went to church in the morning. Mr Arnold & can’t Emily came to see us. Went with Mary & Charlie to the pro-Cathedral  in evening & heard Monseigneur Capel preach.

Monday, 24 July 1871 Mae spent the day with us.

Tuesday, 25 July 1871 I lunched with Margaret. Mary & Charlie came to tea.

Wednesday, 26 July 1871. Little Charlie spent the day with us. Miss Rougemont called.

Thursday, 27 July 1871. Effie came. Mr Wright came to see Isabella & administered the sacrament.

Friday, 28 July 1871. Miss Rougemont called. I went to see the cemetery in the evening.

Saturday, 29 July 1871. Heard from Clayton that Holly was confined on the 26th of a little girl. Mary & Charlie came to tea.

Sunday, 30 July 1871 went to St Philips in the morning. Isabella very poorly. Mary & Charlie came to see her.

Monday, 31 July 1871. I went to say goodbye to Isabella R.Mary & Charlie came to tea. Mr Roberts came to see Isabella.

Tuesday first of August 1871. Papa came home from Brighton. Mary came to see Isabella.

Friday, 4 August 1871.         /            sister very ill.

Tuesday, 6 August 1871. My precious sister “fell asleep” with her head resting on my shoulder. Her end was peace. May our heavenly Father comfort & support us in this heavy affliction. She died at a 7:15. Oh! May we all meet again in that haven of the rest.

resting place and laid by the side of my precious brother. Mr Wright read the service – how beautiful & comforting are the words. Mr Arnold, uncle Henry & uncle Curzon followed.

Friday, 11 August 1871. Mary & Charlie dined with us.

Saturday, 12 August 1871. We dined at Sunderland Lodge.

Sunday, 13 August 1871. We went to church morning & evening and to the cemetery in the afternoon to visit my dear brother & sister’s graves.

Monday, 14 August 1871. Make came to stay with me.

Tuesday, 15 August 1871. Mary & Charlie dined with us.

Wednesday, 16 August 1871. We dined in Norfolk Square.

Thursday, 17 August 1871. I went with aunt Emily to see Mary.

Friday, 10 August 1871. We dined at Sunderland Lodge.

Saturday, 19 August 1871. Took a walk with a & little Alice Cockburn to the Lodge in the gardens.

Sunday, 20 August 1871. Went to church morning & evening.

Monday, 21 August 1871. They left and little Charlie came instead.

Tuesday, 22 August 1871. I walked with her partner to the cemetery.

Wednesday, 23 August 1871. I went with little Charlie & Frank Cockburn into the gardens.

Thursday 24th of August 1871. Little Charlie & I went to Scarsdale house.

Friday, 25 August 1871. Little Charlie drank tea at the Coburn’s & I drove to meet Uncle Curzon

at the Thames embankment & had tea afterwards at Scarsdale house.

Saturday, 26 August 1871.Beppo[?] died. Took little Charlie home and we dined at S.Lodge.

Sunday, 27 August 1871. Went to church morning & to the cemetery in the afternoon. Miss Ward, Charlie & uncle W & aunt Leticia came to see us. Church in the evening.

Monday, 20 August 1871. Went into my district. Lunched & went to see aunt Georgiana.

Tuesday, 29 August 1871. It came, I went to meet her in Palace Gardens, we had tea at S.House.

Wednesday, 30 August 1871. Took if he home & dined at S.Lodge. My little godchild christened Ella[?] Catherine.

Thursday, 31 August 1871. Lunched with Mrs Arnold & went to see Mary.

Friday first of September 1871. Three years today since my precious brother died! I visited his & my dear sisters grave, what a sad blank it is without them both, may we all one day be reunited again!

Thursday, 2 September 1871. Went with Mary to have her photo taken atAllcotts[?] & Fry’s. Dined at S.Lodge.

Tuesday, 3 September 1871. Went to church morning & evening & to the cemetery in the afternoon.

Monday, 4 September 1871. Wet day did not go out.

Tuesday, 5 September 1871 Papa left by the 9.45 train for Eastbourne to get apartments. I left by the 1.35. Charlie & Papa met me at the station. Mary & the children came down at 5.00. We have apartments at 59 Langney Road [BN21 3QD].

Wednesday, 6 September 1871. A month today since my dear sister died. So went to St saviours Church & afterwards to the rectory to see Mr and sand Mrs Whelpton.

Thursday, 7 September 1871. Sat on the beach. I went to see Mrs. Keelping[?]. After doing played at croquet the rectory. After tea set on the pier, the band played.

Friday, 8 September 1871. Two St saviours on the beach. In the afternoon went with Mary to see the Miss Rougemont’s.

Saturday, 9 September 1871. Went on the beach.

Sunday, 10 September 1871. Went to St saviours morning & evening. Sat on the beach under the Wish Tower  In the afternoon.

Monday, 11 September 1871. Charlie’s birthday. Sat on the beach in the morning. After dinner played croquet at the Whelpstons.

Tuesday, 12 September 1871. Sat on the beach in the morning. After dinner went for a drive with Mary & Charlie to Wannock.

Wednesday, 13 September 1871. Went to church in the morning, sat on the beach in the afternoon.

Thursday, 14 September 1871 my [33rd] birthday. Letters from Fanny, Isabella, Maggie, aunt Margaret. The dear children came to tea.

Friday, 15 September 1871. Went to church in the morning. Played croquet in the afternoon. Heard from Georgie.

Saturday, 16 September 1871. Took a walk with Charlie along the beach & Sands to Beachy head.

Sunday, 17 September 1871. Went to St saviours morning & evening and on the beach in the afternoon.

Monday, 18 September 1871. Certain beach in the morning played at croquet in the afternoon. Played at croquet.

Tuesday, 19 September 1871. Sat on the beach in the morning & parade in the afternoon.

Wednesday, 20 September 1871. Went to church in the morning. In the afternoon helps to decorate the church. We worked till 9 o’clock.

Thursday, 21 September 1871. The harvest thanksgiving at St saviours. Mr Mortimer preached in the morning & Mr Peach from Willingdon in the evening. In the afternoon we played croquet & drank tea at Whelpstons.

Friday, 22 September 1871. Sat on the beach & went to church in the morning, & went to the Convalescent Home in the afternoon with Mary & Charlie.

Saturday, 23 September 1871. Wet day. Wrote to Margaret, Tina[?], & Agnes Noble.

Sunday, 24 September 1871. Went to St saviours morning & evening. Sat on raid in the afternoon.

Monday, 26 September 1871. Went on the beach in the morning. Wet afternoon.

Tuesday, 26 September 1871. Went on parade morning & afternoon & appear in the evening.

Wednesday, 27 September 1871. MrsCappa[?] & Went to play at croquet at the Whelpstons and had tea there.

Step 28 September 1878. Went to see me miss Rougemont’s and went on the pier. We left Eastbourne by two top 30 trading, arrived at Victoria soon after five.

Friday, 29 September 1871. I went to see Maggie. Auntie Fanny & Isabella
