January 1861

Tuesday. Jan: 1st  January

Wrote to Mary.  Went to church. Called on Miss Parkinson who was not at home    did some shopping in the town.  After lunch worked[1] & practised[2] & in the evening worked & played at cards.

Wednesday 2nd  January

After breakfast wrote to Mary then walked across the Gardens to Gloucester Square [about two miles]; first went to see Harriette Bird[3], looking very well & we were very glad to meet again.  She walked with me as far as G.S. [Gloucester Square].   Met Polly & Isabella just coming out of the house.  Walked with them to Baker Street [about a mile].  When we came back we found Mr Litton & his sister also Mr Thackeray in the Drawing room.  Mrs Drury & Harriette also called & Mrs Philpott who stayed to lunch.  After lunch Isabella Willie Jemmie & I went to the Edgware Road.   Isabella & I called at the J. Daniells, Nina & Aurora at home    returned to G.S. & I stayed to tea.   Tea party consisted of Richard, Lucy Fisher, Margaret, Willie, Jemmie & self    returned home in a cab at 8 o/c.  Isabella drank tea at the Kingdons.

Thursday 3rd    January

After breakfast we went to see Miss Parkinson    Isabella Surtees and I then walked across the Gardens.   first we went to see Miss Joubert    also said goodbye to Julia Johnson then went to the Arnolds where we spent the day.   Carry & Emily Dane came to lunch.  After lunch we, namely Mary, Mr Thornewill L & E Warre Isabella Surtees & self    went to the Missionary Tree and bazaar   met Isabella Margaret Auntie  Uncle Richd  Georgie Agnes Aurora Marion Blanche Lelpyt[?] & Lucy Fisher.  After remaining some time we called in Offord Terrace saw cousins Richard & Matilda who{?} left Emily there & returned back to W.P.Villas.  spent a very jolly evening    Mr Wall came in the evening   left soon after 10 o/c in a cab.  Charlie[?] also spent the evening with us.

Friday 4th    January

After breakfast wrote to Georgie & Ellen Wasser[Warren ?]   worked   went in the town to get a song for Isabella   also to see Jane Wynter[?][4], came in to lunch then went with Jane to the Round Pond   met Mary & her cousin.  Surtees skated & sprained his wrist.  Called on Mrs. Turner who was out.  In the evening worked & read.

Saturday 5th  January

After breakfast worked. Went to Millbank & got there about 12 o/c. o/ had lunch at 1 o/c. after lunch we played with the children till the Gloucester Square carriage came to fetch George & Lucy Tucker, Auntie Polly & Isabella came in ch.  I stayed & had some tea with the new checks. At 5 o/c Richard walked with me as far as Albert Gate    came the rest of the way in a cab by myself.  In the evening read the newspaper & “Evan Harrington[5].

Sunday 6th  January

After breakfast read Blunt’s Lectures[6]. Went to church, Mr Wright preacher. After lunch went to see Emma, came home with Papa by Camden Hill.  Had dinner at 5 o/c. Went to church at 7 o/c.  After tea read Blunt’s Lectures.

Monday 7th  January

After breakfast worked. At 12 o/c went to meet the Warrs,we missed them but found them here on our return. Emily and I called at Miss Parkinson’s to find out what time the wedding was to be & then went into the town. After lunch I practised a little. Soon after 4 o/c the Warres left we walked with them as far as the entrance to Palace Gardens then ??? and I went to see Jane & stayed with her some little time, called on the kingdoms but they were out. Had tea at 7.  After tea read “Evan Harrington” & played at Whist.

Tuesday 8th January

After breakfast Jane, Isabella and I went to St Barnabas Church to see Miss Parkinson married, Mary & her cousin met us there, it was a very small wedding Archdeacon Hale & Dr Hessie performed the service.   After it was over Mary & her cousin went home & we went to look at some houses. Came home & had lunch after which Isabella and I went into the town & then to the square to see Mrs and Mr Parkinson leave which they did at 3 o/c. coming home we met Mr Haffenden. .Surtees went to the play in the evening to see “Colleen Bawn”[7]. I worked at my   ???.  Received an invitation to a party at Mrs Turner’s also Mrs Cecil’s, also wedding cards.

Wednesday 9th January

In the morning worked. Went to church at ½ past 11 o/c.  after church went into the town. After lunch went to the Round Pond. Jane went with us & we walked across with her brother. We then went to Westbourne Grove. I bought a pair of gloves. Came home, had dinner at 6 o/c. In the evening worked and read.

Thursday 10th January

Worked, went out at 12 o/c to look at some houses in Scarsdale villas. After lunch went to see Jane, came home & practised. Also heard Isabella her singing. In the evening went to a party at Mrs Turner’s, Blanche ??? was there & several other people I knew. They had some private theatricals, the first part of the evening, we got home before10 o/c.  Surtees went to a party at the Moore’s.

Friday 12th January

Answered the Cecil’s invite. Worked & practised. Went to Camden Hill & into the town. After lunch read history went out & met Mary in Victoria Road. She gave me Mrs Jewsberg’s invitation for the 23rd. We then went to the round pond. I saw Mr Wynter and Mary’s cousin. Stayed there till 4.30. Came home & heard Isabella her singing.  Surtees dined at the Moore’s.  in the evening worked and read as usual.

Saturday 12th January

After breakfast works. At 11 o/c Jane came for me & we went together to the old church to see Miss Payne married. The Archdeacon performed the service.  There were nine bridesmaids. After it was over we went to Scarsdale Villas then through the town home. After lunch Jane & I went to The Grove & called on Sunderland Terrace. Aunt Emma at home. Came home through Church Street & went to Dunters to buy some paper. Came in to church. After dinner answered Mrs Jewsbury’s invitation for the 23rd. Then worked etc. – wrote to Aunt Emma.

Sunday 13th January

After breakfast read. Went to Christchurch. The Archdeacon preached. Received the sacrament.in the afternoon went to the old church with Papa – dinner at 5 o/c. Isabella & Surtees went to church & I read Blunt’s Lectures.

Monday, 14th  January

Worked and went out shopping. After lunch we went to fetch Jane but she could not go out. We then went into the Gardens, Met Mary & her cousin who came with us to Scarsdale villas. We then went back to the Round Pond. Mary left us & we came home. Jane & Alice Kingdon[8] spent the evening with us, Charlie also came to see us.

Tuesday 15th January

After breakfast went to Scarsdale villas to look over number 26. Coming back we went to say goodbye to Jane. When we got home I wrote to Tina & Ellen to thank them for the lovely handkerchief they sent me, then took the letter to the post. After Emma went out with Surtees called on Mrs Turner not at home. Then went to the Round Pond. Afterwards into the town to do some shopping, went to Derry’s! Met Miss Brown. Came home & talked over the fence. After dinner worked & played at Whist.

Wednesday 16th January

After breakfast worked on my poplin dress then went to the old church. After lunch went to the round pond with Surtees. Came home, worked & practised. Worked in the morning. Surtees went to see the skating on the Serpentine.

Thursday 17th January

Worked all the morning. In the afternoon took a walk. In the evening worked & played at Whist. Surtees went back to school.

Friday 18th January

After breakfast mended my clothes, wrote to Fanny. Walked across the gardens. Met Mary & her cousin. Said goodbye to the latter who was going to Oxford the same afternoon. Went to Gloucester square, they had all gone to the Crystal Palace except uncle. I stayed with him a short time then went on to Norfolk Square.  Stayed for lunch. Returned home at3 o/c. Went into the town to buy a net for Isabella. In the evening worked & played at Whist.

Saturday 19th January

In the morning worked. Received a note from Miss Jenkins which I answered.went to Scarsdale villas with Papa & Isabella. In the afternoon walked over to Sunderland Terrace with Papa. Sore aunt Emma & aunt Margaret. I called in Park Terrace, saw Mrs Jenkins,Miss J was out. Returned home about 5 o/c.  in the evening worked at Isabella’s bonnet & played at Whist

Sunday 20th January

In the morning went to church. Archdeacon Sinclair preached.  After lunch went with Papa to Norfolk Square. Saw Aunt G & Uncle H. In the evening we all went to Christchurch. Read Blunt’s Lectures.

Monday 21st January

After breakfast finished Isabella’s bonnet, covered the large Bible & prayer book. Went out, had lunch at 1 o/c.  Afterwards went out. Came in & practised.in the evening, worked & had a game at Whist

Tuesday 22nd January

Worked. Went to Brompton to see Mrs Cecil, found her at home. In the afternoon shopped. Jane came in the evening & we tried on our evening dresses. Papa dined in Sunderland Terrace.

Wednesday 23rd January

After breakfast put up our evening dresses except. Went to church. Wrote to Isabel Ellershaw[9]. In the afternoon we went up to Sunderland Terrace in a cab. In the evening Mary, Charlie, Isabella & self went to a party at Mrs Jewsbury. After supper we went to the Jenkins for our also & then returned to Mrs Dewsbury’s [sic] where we stayed till nearly½ past 3 o/c. very tired when we got home.

Thursday 24th January

Had breakfast between ½ past 9 & 10 o/c, then played to Aunt Margaret afterwards we went to see Miss Jenkins, Mary & then aunt Leticia. Got home to lunch at 1.30. Put up our dresses etc.. Mary came & we went together to see Charlie who was suffering from an asthmatic attack. Miss Arnold also came to pay him a visit. Isabella & I returned to Sunderland Terrace and at5 o/c came home in a cab. Had dinner at8 o/c. in the evening worked & read.

Friday 25th January

Put our room tidy which occupied me till 12 o/c. When I got ready to go out. We took a walk & came in soon after 1 o/c. after lunch we called forward Jane & she went with us to see our new house.practised to Raffe [?] came in. In the evening worked & read.

Saturday 26th  January

Worked & went out shopping in the morning. In the afternoon we walked over to enquire how Charlie was; he was out so we returned & coming back we met James. We then went to the square to get some ???.  Went to Derry’s then home with James where we stayed till nearly ½ past 5 o/c.  dined by myself also spent evening alone in my bedroom. Worked, read, & roasted chestnuts.  Not a very lively evening!

Sunday 27th January

Went to church in the morning. After lunch Papa, Isabella & I went to Norfolk Square. We did not go in for we met uncle Henry & the two boys & they walked back with us part of the way. In the gardens we met at Uncle, Isabella, Willie & Jemima went to church in the evening.

Monday 28th January

After breakfast I practised. At ½ past 11 o/c went to fetch chain, she & Isabella walked across the gardens with me & I went to lunch in Gloucester Square. Just as I got there I met Isabella & Maggie coming out of the house so we went for a walk together. Got back to lunch at 1 o/c. Miss Tritt on & Mrs Robert Tritt on lunched there. After lunch sat with dear Maggie in the schoolroom, it was so cosy. At ½ past 2 o/c Auntie, Isabella, Willie, Jemima & I went in the carriage. We did a great deal of shopping met Richard who went with the two boys to the polytechnic. Left auntie at the James Daniels, then Isabella & I went in the carriage to the end of Palace Gardens. I got out & walked home. In the evening worked & read & had a game at Whist.

Tuesday 29th January

After breakfast practised & heard Isabella sing. Wrote to Harriette Bird then went into the town & to see Jane who had got a bad sore throat. After lunch read a little then walked over to Westbourne Square to see Aunt Harriett. Met Aunt Cecilia (?).  Stayed with aunt Harriett some little time, a lady who was calling there sent me in her carriage as far as the end of Palace Gardens. Got home at 5 o/c.  Isabella spent the day at the Kingdons.  Went to church in the evening.  Received a note from Miss Amelia Jenkins inviting us to her party on the seventh of next month. In the evening worked.

Wednesday 30th January

Read English history. Heard from Lindsay. Practised. Went to church then into the town. Also to see Miss Mowbray. Came home for lunch. Afterwards practised. Wrote to Mary. Went to see Jane etc. Isabella spent the day at the Kingdons. In the evening read & worked.

Thursday 31st January

Heard Isabella her singing. Answered Miss A. Jenkins invitation. Made up my accounts. Went with Jane in the town. After dinner we walked to Sunderland Terraceto call on Mrs Dewsbury but they were all out so we went into the Grove where we met Mary.Got home again at 5 o/c.in the evening, we went to a party at the Cecil’s; we dare heard of the death of Hampton. Left at 1.30. Mr & Mrs Taylor brought us home.

[5] A novel by George Meredith. (1860), an amusing comedy in which Meredith used the family tailoring establishment and his own relatives for subject matter. The hero is the son of a tailor who has been brought up abroad as a “gentleman” and has fallen in love with the daughter of a baronet. His ordeal comes when he returns home to find his father dead and himself heir to the tailor shop and a considerable debt. 

[6] Henry Blunt (1794–1843) was an evangelical cleric of the Church of England. Blunt published courses of lectures delivered during Lent at Chelsea on the lives of biblical figures. The first of these were the Lectures on the Life of Jacob, delivered in 1823; these were succeeded by courses on St. Peter (1829), Abraham (1831), St. Paul in two series (1832, 1833), and closing with one on the Prophet Elisha in 1839, the six years' interval seeing the publication of three courses on The Life of Jesus Christ (1834–36), a volume of discourses on Some of the Doctrinal Articles of the Church of England in 1835, a volume of selected Sermons in 1837, and Expository Sermons on the Epistles to the Seven Churches in 1838. Friday 1st February

After breakfast received a letter from Maggie telling me she could not come to see me. Worked & wrote to Maggie. Went into the town. Met Jane coming here she asked me to spend the evening with her. In the afternoon we called upon the Browns, they were out. We had a very jolly evening with Jane, played & talked over the fire.  Mr Groves[?] paid us a visit.

 

Saturday 2nd February

Read history. Went to church then took Mrs Wynter over our new house. Came home & had lunch. Afterwards walked to Norfolk Crescent to enquire after uncle James, then to Norfolk Square where we met aunt Emma & aunt Margaret, we walked with them to Porchester Terrace, then home. In the evening Surtees was taken ill & we had to send for Mr Pollock. Received a letter from Margaret. Sat with Surtees the rest of the evening.

 

Sunday 3rd February

Mr Pollock came again. Went to church. In the afternoon took a walk in the gardens, then went to the old church, met Mrs and Miss Brown as I was coming home. In the evening read Blunt’s Lectures. Papa & Isabella went to church.

 

Monday 4th February

After breakfast worked, practised & wrote to Fanny. We walked up to Gloucester Square to lunch. Uncle, Isabella, & Margaret walked back with us across the gardens in the afternoon, got home about ½ past 3 o/c.  Mrs Haffenden came to see Surtees. In the evening worked & played at Whist

 

Tuesday 5th February

After breakfast wrote to Aunt Emma, Miss Jenkins & Agnes Noble. Practised, also heard Isabella her singing. After lunch went across the gardens. Met Mary in a [???] & we went together to Duke Street to see Jenny, Mary was measured for her new dress, also to Ludlow & Cockburns in Bond Street. Then home..In the evening put some buttons on my dress & read.

 

Wednesday 6th February

Received a letter from aunt Margaret. Wrote to Georgie. Practised. Went out with Surtees. After lunch finished my practising. Mrs Haffenden came. Went into the town etc.  in the evening Charlie came, we went to the missionary meeting. Got home about ¼ past 9 o/c.  had tea soon after went to bed.

 

Thursday 7th February

.went to see Jane. At11 o/c we went to the old church to see Miss Pope married. In the afternoon put up my things. Went up to Sunderland Terrace in a cab, found Mary there, she did Isabella’s hair before tea & mine after.  She then went home to address. Charlie came & at 9 o/c we left for the party at Mrs Henry Jenkins in Kildare Terrace. Had a most delightful party; I danced every dance except one (24 in number).  Left about ½ past 2 o/c. Mrs Jenkins took us home.

 

Friday 8th February

 At 12 o/c I went to see Miss Jenkins she was out, then went to see Mary. After lunch we returned home. Practised. In the evening worked & read.

 

Saturday 9th February

Wet day. Worked nearly all the morning. In the afternoon Mrs Haffenden came to see Surtees. In the evening worked & read the newspapers.

 

Sunday 10th February

Went to Christchurch in the morning, received the sacrament; the Archdeacon preached. After lunch Surtees & I went into the Gardens then to the old church, heard Mr Brooke[???].  Papa & Isabella walked up to Westbourne Park. Aunt Leticia & uncle William called here but we were out. Papa & I called on Mrs Harris . In the evening Papa  & Isabella went to church; Surtees & I stayed at home. We talked over the fire. Read Blunt’s Lectures.

 

Monday 11th February

Richard’s birthday.wrote out my journal. Packed up my trunk. Went out with Isabella. After lunch Jane came to see us, when she had gone I finished putting up my things. Practised a little and at ¼ to 5 left for Millbank. Got there at about ¼ past 5 o/c.  at  ½ past 6 Georgie, little G.& self went to drink tea at Mrs Gibson’s; Papa & Mrs Wallace were also there. We left at 10 o/c.

 

Tuesday 12th February

After breakfast played with the children. At 11 o/c came down to the drawing room & I read out loud to Georgie till lunch. After lunch I went to see Mrs Aldrich but she was out. Read & worked rest of the afternoon. In the evening drank tea at Capt & Mrs Wallace’s.

 

Wednesday 13th February

Wet morning, could not get to church. Stayed with the children till 11 o/c. Then read the service to Georgie. After lunch read Blackwood’s Magazine to Georgie. Polly, Isabella & Marie[?] Longman came here. Richard came home in the evening.

 

Thursday 14th February

Went out with the chicks, called on Mrs Aldrich, she was out. Came home at 1 o/c. In the afternoon read & worked. Richard dined in Gloucester Square.

 

Friday 15th February

In the morning read & worked. In the afternoon Aunt Marianne, Mrs Hunt[?]-Ferres & Harriett called. Went out with Richard, we went to Covent Garden, then to Regent Street & Bond Street. Auntie ??? Fanny & Polly arrived here, had a very jolly evening. Heard from Surtees.

Saturday 16th February

After breakfast went out with the chicks, we went to see Mrs Aldrich, found her at home, saw the baby. In the afternoon, we went out in a fly, went to the Pantheon. Also to see Aunt Marianne etc. In the evening worked & Georgie sang.

Sunday 17th February

In the morning went to the Prison Chapel. Afterwards to the garden with Georgie & Richard.  Dinner at 1 o/c. After dinner we all went out together for a walk.  At ½  4 past o/c went to the prison chapel women’s service. Mr still called. Mrs Gibson came to see Georgie. Had tea at 7 o/c. in the evening Mrs Gibson & Willie came, had a very nice evening, red “Marie Therese de Lamourmour”.

Monday 18th February

After breakfast played with the children. Wrote to Papa. Read to Georgie. In the afternoon stayed at home with Georgie. At 5 o/c Polly, Isabel & Maggie came to spend the evening. We had a very jolly evening. Richard showed us the “cats”.

Tuesday 19th February

Uncle’s birthday. Stayed at home in the morning. In the afternoon went out with dear little Georgie & baby. We walked to Battersea Park. Mrs gambit & Mrs Gibson were at Millbank when we returned. At 6 o/c the carriage with auntie Maggie & Fanny came to fetch us, we dined in Gloucester Square, Edward & Agnes also dined there. We had a game at “squish” in the evening, enjoyed myself so very much.

Wednesday 20th February

After breakfast read the newspaper & played with the children. The haircutter came, we all had our hair cut, then went with the chicks for a walk. After lunch went to see Mrs Gibson then packed up my things. Left Millbank at 4 o/c. got home before 5 o/c. found Isabella and Surtees at home.Papa came home at 5 o/c. in the evening wrote to my journal, worked, after tea played at Whist.

Thursday 21st February

Fanny’s birthday. Wrote to Fanny, Georgie & Cecilia Mrs Gibson. Heard Isabella her singing. Went out for a walk in the afternoon. Practised, copied out some music. In the evening went to church, heard Mr Wright preach. Got home at  9 o/c. had tea, worked the rest of the evening.

Friday 22nd February

In the morning wrote to Mary, heard Isabella her singing. Copied out some music. Went out at 12o/c. In the afternoon practised. Took a walk in the garden with Isabella & Surtees. In the evening worked.

Saturday 23rd February

Wet day, worked. Stayed at home all day.

Sunday 24th February

Surtees went to Mrs Brown’s after breakfast to hear a lecture upon confirmation; we went to church. Mr Wright preached; in the afternoon, Papa, Isabella & Surtees went to church. In the evening, Isabella and I went to church. Read Blunt’s Lectures.

Monday 25th February

Wrote to Tina Noble. Practised. Went out into the town. In the afternoon read French. Worked. Went out for a walk. In the evening read & worked.

Tuesday 26 February

Wrote to Mary. Practised. Heard Isabella’s singing. Read history. After lunch read French. Worked. Went into the town, we also called upon Mrs Cecil, found her at home. In the evening worked & read.

Wednesday 27th February

Read history. Wrote my journal. Practised. Went to ???.  in the afternoon called upon Mrs Henry Jenkins, this is in Jenkins, Sunderland Terrace. & Aunt Leticia. Isabella stayed to dinner in Westbourne Park. Also went to see Mary. Surtees dined at the Mars. Papa and I dined alone. Wrote to Georgie & worked in the evening.

Thursday 28th February

Started for Sunderland terraced directly after breakfast, at¼ to 11.  Went to St Stephen’s Church to see Miss Byde married. Found Mary & Isabella there. The wedding was over a little before 12 o/c. we then went into see Miss Jenkins for a few minutes then back to Sunderland Terrace. Mary walked with me to the top of the Queen’s Road. Got home a little after 1 o/c. in the afternoon practised & read French. Went out for a short walk. In the evening Isabella and I went to church; Met Mary and Charles there. MrMeynell preached. Charlie & Mary walked home with us.  Couple [?] Turner drank tea here. Worked after tea.

Went out for a little in the morning. Went to church. In the afternoon called on Mrs Harris.

Saturday, 2nd March

After breakfast dusted the books. Went with Papa to Scarsdale fillers, went to see Blanche ??? , found her at home, stayed with her till past 1 o/c.  after lunch Isabella and I went with Papa to Bedford Place. It began to rain so we returned home.

Sunday 3rd March

Went to Christchurch morning and evening. In the afternoon walked up to Sunderland Terrace, also to Westbourne Park. Saw Aunt Leticia.  Aunt Margaret & Aunt Emma walked part of the way home with us, met Stanley in the gardens.

Monday 4th March

Heard from Polly. Georgie, Polly and the two chicks came to see me. In the afternoon Blanche ??? and I went to see Mary. We found the Gloucester Square carriage there. Auntie & Fanny were calling there. Then we went to see Miss Jenkins. Returned home soon after 5 o/c. Heard from E. Warre

Tuesday 5th March

Isabella’s birthday. In the morning we went into the town and to our new house. In the afternoon Mary came & we walked with her across the gardens. I gave Isabella a little brooch. I went to see Blanche. In the evening Charlie dined with us.

Wednesday 6th March

A very happy day. Prepared for our party. Mary came at 12o/c.  Charlie also lunched with us. In the afternoon we went into the town & took Mary & Charlie over our new house. Charlie went to his lodgings & came back at 6.  Aunts Margaret & Emma arrived. We went up to dress at 5 o/c. dear old Mary did our hair for us. At 7 o/c the people began to arrive, our friends were (Ladies) Miss Brown, Blanche ???, Mary & Alice Kingdon. (Gentleman) Mr Winter, Mr Haffenden, Mr Moore, young ??? & Turner. Had most delightful evening. Went away at 12 o/c. I hope all things with all my heart Mary continues to progress smoothly as they do at present.

Thursday 7th March

??? came & we took a walk together. Isabella went to see the Hayes. In the afternoon Mary came here. Mr Meynell also called. Isabella & I went out with Mary at ¼ to 5 o/c. In the square  we met Surtees. We all walked together across the gardens & left Mary. Returned home, had dinner at 6 o/c.  in the evening Isabella and I went to the old church, Mr Brooke preached.

Friday 8th March

After breakfast wrote to my journal. Went to church. Walked home with Blanche ??? & Mrs ???. Went to see Jane, she walked with us in Kensington Gardens. After lunch practised & red. Went into the town. Wrote to aunt Caroline. Aunt Leticia called but we were out, she brought Isabella a dress. Surtees stayed late at school.

Saturday 9th March

After breakfast wrote two or three notes for Papa.  Worked. Went to the park. In the afternoon went to Scarsdale villas with Papa. Afterwards for a walk in the gardens. Received a letter from Fanny.

Sunday 10th March

In the morning went to Christchurch, Mr Wright preached a charity sermon for the national schools. Receive the sacrament. In the afternoon, walked to Norfolk Square they were all out. Surtees and I called in Gloucester Square. Saw them all except Polly. Met Jane & Capt Verey as we were coming home. Went to church in the evening, Mr Wright preached. Jane & Capt V. were at church;  he is very handsome, we spoke after church & she told me it was settled. Surtees went to hear Mr Molyneux in the morning.

Monday 11th March

After breakfast went to see Jane; we walked as far as Tase’e[?] together. When I got home again Blanche ??? was here. She stayed with us till 12 o/c. Then we walked home with her, took a little walk & came home to lunch at 1 o/c.  Isabella went to school & Mary came to see me in the afternoon to ask me to spend the day there on Wednesday. At a little before 5 o/c she left; I walked part of the way across the gardens with her & then returned home. In the evening, worked. Surtees spent the evening at Brompton.

Tuesday 12th March

Papa stayed at home. After breakfast packed up a few things. Wrote to Evelyn Warre. In the afternoon practised, wrote. Went out for a walk; came in at 5 o/c.  Mrs Lawson called.

Wednesday 13th March

Spent the day at the Arnolds, in the afternoon we took a walk. Charlie came at 6 o/c. we had a very jolly evening. Left at 10 o/c.

Thursday 14th March

After breakfast packed up my things, went out for a walk in the gardens at 12 o/c. Isabella spent the afternoon and evening at Miss Parkinson’s. Mrs & Miss Harris called. Finished my letter to E. Warre. In the evening went to church with Jane. Isabella went to Miss Parkinson’s.

Friday 15th March

In the morning walked with Jane to Websters & we had our likenesses taken on a carte de visite. Went to see Mary, all to Garvey Road to see Mary’s likeness. In the afternoon she came over to us, we went shopping in the town, in the evening we went to a concert at the Grammar School.

Saturday 16th March

Wet day, stayed at home all day. The Duchess of Kent died at 9.30 in the morning.

Sunday 17th March

Went to church, they played “The Dead March in Saul”, Mr Wright preached, also in the evening.

Monday 18th March

Walked over to Norfolk Square. Had lunch in Gloucester Square, walked with Maggie at 12 to Westbourne Grove. Aunt Marianne & Harriet Jenner came to lunch. Georgie, Richard & Mrs Gibson called at 4.30.  We, namely auntie Isabella & self went in the carriage. They brought me home. Maggie & I also went to see the Longmans in the morning.

Tuesday 19th March

Our furniture began to be moved. Isabella and I spent the day in Norfolk Square. Charlie, Mary, to Miss Stapleton’s & Miss Dryden came to dinner.left at 9.30.

Wednesday 20th March

Moved to our new house.

Thursday 21st March

Heard from Alice. Went to Eldon Road. I also went to see Jane. In the afternoon helped to put up the pictures, etc. in the evening went to church. Mr Taylor preached.

Friday 22nd March

After breakfast went into the town, Jane came to see us. Made my black bonnet.  In the afternoon Mary came to see us also Jane & to miss Vereys.  She came to invite us to spend the evening with her. We walked across the garden with Mary & went to order a carriage. Jane & Miss Verey met us & we walked back together. Spent a very pleasant evening; played at cards at sector. Got home at 10.30.

Saturday 23rd March

Went with Mary, her aunt, & Charlie in a carriage to Mortlake to see the Oxford & Cambridge boat race, Oxford one. Enjoyed ourselves extremely. Came home by Putney & Fulham. Went to the Kensington Matter[?] for half an hour then home.in the afternoon we took a short walk in the gardens. Also to see Jane. Surtees spent the evening at the Mars. Wrote to Emily Warre.

Sunday 24th March

In the morning went to Christchurch, heard Mr Wright preach. After lunch walked up to Sunderland Terrace, met aunt Leticia & uncle William, aunts E &  M walked part of the way back with us. In the evening went to church.

Monday 25th March

Heard from Richard, dear Georgie had got a little boy born on Friday the 22nd inst: at 1.30. The Duchess of Kent’s funeral took place today. In the afternoon walked over to see Miss Jenkins, found her at home. Met Miss Arnold & Mr Carroll.  Went to church at 5 o/c.

Tuesday 26th March

Went to church in the morning P,apa stayed at home. We went to see Jane. Aunt Leticia &??? Came to say goodbye.

Wednesday 27th March

Went to lunch in Sunderland Terrace, Mary was there. She & Charlie walked nearly home with us.

Thursday 28th March

Stayed at home until ½ past 4 o/c. when we went to church. In the evening we went to the old church & heard Mr McConnachie preach. A very good sermon.

Good Friday 29th of March

In the morning we went to Christchurch; the Archdeacon preached. In the afternoon Papa, Surtees & Iwalked across the gardens to see Mr Poole, he was at home. Mr Haffenden called only Isabella at home. At  5 o/c we all went to Christ Church, no sermon. In the evening, read.

Saturday 30th March

In the morning we went with Jane to try Mr Bertram’s piano; also to see the house in which the theatricals are to be performed.  Auntie Maggie, Willie ???? came here in the afternoon. So very glad to see them; we stayed here about a ¼ of an hour. Then Papa, Isabella & I walked to Lee’s nursery gardens at Hammersmith. Went to church at 5 o/c with Jane.

Easter Sunday 31st March

Went to Christchurch, received the holy Communion. In the afternoon walked up to Norfolk Square, met Charlie & Mary as we were coming home. In the evening went to Christchurch.
