This provided the opportunity for Rich Milner and Rich Craven to stake a place in the squad and for Chris cannon and Dave Easby, both impressive in pre season to be included. As might be expected in a local derby there was little quarter given and chances were few and far between. It was no surprise then that the opening goal came from a set piece when Danny Jacklyn unleashed an explosive free kick from 30 yards into the roof of the net. Whilst Spartans had more of the possession, Bramham always looked dangerous on the break with Dowson troubling the home defence on several occasions with his direct running and he should have put the visitors 2 up just befoe the break when he stepped inside Prendagast after a mazey run only to fire wide. Spartans were back in the game on 50 minutes when a mix up in the visitors defence allowed an easy tap in to level the scores. Boston gained the upper hand but Jacklyn and Ewen held firm and Ford in midfield showed his class and composure. On 70 minutes Milner was brought down in the box for a stonewall penalty but astonishingly the referee adjudged the ball to have gone over the goal line for a goal kick Another goal was ruled out for the visitors when Milner latched on to Elliots' slide rule pass and calmy slotted home only this time to be adjudged offside. Boston always carried a threat but Lloyd looked assured in the Bramham goal and the game finished level after 90 minutes. with Bramham winning the ensuing penalty shoot out 6-5 to go through to face Monk Fryston in the next round.
