Thirsk 2 Bramham 0

by Unknown - 06:33 on 02 May 2010

Team selection for this League Cup Final tie had been a concern all week with doubts over several players and it was only 45 minutes before kick off that Bramham were able to finalise their line up.

Stapleton struggling with a groin injury was ruled out and Steve Davis made a return after several weeks lay off on the right hand side of the midfield.

Bramham started brightly and had the better of the opening exchanges but as the game settled down, defences were on top, with chances a rare commodity. Both keepers were in fine form when called upon with Zealand making an excellent save on 40 minutes, low to his left.

As the teams left the field at the break there was little to choose between them.  Collins replaced Davis at half time and again it was Bramham who had the better of the early exchanges at the restart.

Thirsk increasingly began to impose themselves on the game and on the hour mark they made a breakthrough, when Les Williams speculative overhead kick bounced in off the post and from that point it was always to be an uphill battle for Bramham.

Striker Jason Wright was clearly struggling with a strain, but such is his reputation, that the Thirsk rearguard had to remain alert but they were given some more breathing space when Williams nipped in to capitalise on some indecisive defensive work and put the County Cup winners two goals up.

Bramham sent on Prendagast and Linyard in the closing stages, but Thirsk were able to see the game out and collect their second trophy of the season.

There is little doubt that when they are able to field their strongest team Thirsk are formidable opponents, but Bramham have been a revalation from the side that struggled to survive in the Premier League last term.

It would be wrong to single out any one player in this final game of the season, for they all performed and the committment from the first whistle was impressive and having matched their opponents for over an hour they can be proud of a gutsy display.

Congratulations to Thirsk, a fine team who play the game in the right way.
