Bramham 1 Thirsk 1

by Unknown - 19:46 on 23 February 2008

Runaway League leaders Thirsk boasting 18 straight wins since the start of the season travelled down the A1 for what on paper looked like a certain away win. In the end they were delighted to make the return journey with a point as their outstanding 100% record finally came to an end at resurgent Bramham .

Bramhams own record of 5 wins out of their last 6 league games was perhaps a pointer to the events of the afternoon.

From the first whistle Bramham under the new management duo of Firth and Jones, chased all causes, even the lost ones as they set the tone for the afternoon. Thirsk enjoyed the bulk of the possession, but Bramham were meticulously drilled and restricted their illustrious visitors to half chances and snap shots.

On the half hour mark Bramham broke away and stole the lead when Dowson bore down on goal and forced an error  at the heart of the defence to put Bramham ahead. The first half eventually ended on 52 minutes, with the home side looking solid.

The second half saw relentless pressure as Thirsk piled forward with raids down the flanks, penetrating runs through the middle and telling crosses,as they forced corner after corner.

Tasker in the Bramham goal was a colossous, time and again he collected crossess, commanded his area and rightly was named  man of the match.

The wave of attacks continued into the 8th minute of injury time and when all hope looked lost Thirsk snatched an equaliser with the last action of the match, when for one second Tasker lost concentration, mishandled a hopeful punt and the vistors grabbed a point.

This was terribly harsh on the keeper and the Bramham team, who had fought so bravely to pull off the upset of the season, but they can take pride in being the only team this season to take points of the champions elect.

What a transformation this team has undergone since the dark days of the autumn. What a gulf there is between the Premier League and the First Division, a gulf that Bramham have now come to terms with as the club consolidates its rightful place in Harrogate and District Football
