Day 1 1/2 - 10.30am ~ Sat 16th

Palle Alone in the World
Astrid Henning-Jensen | Denmark | 1949 | 25 min | Cert U

A young boy wakes up to find that everyone’s gone, so he can drive trams and do whatever he wants.  Life is one big train set.  A rarely-seen classic.

Plus
Paddle to the Sea

Bill Mason | Canada | 1966 | 28 min | Cert U

A boy carves a toy boat paddled by a native Canadian.  He puts it in a river and we watch its epic journey to the ocean.  Gorgeously photographed along Canada’s massive watercourse.  Oscar-nominated and gently mythic.

Day 1 1/2 - 2pm

All About Eve
Joseph Mankiewicz  | USA | 1950 | 138 min | Cert U

Bette as splenetic Margot, Anne Baxter creeping up on her and us.  Triple distilled dialogue (feel free to shout the lines), oceans of spleen.  The world turns on its head.  Fasten your seatbelts…Writer/director Joseph Mankiewicz takes us on one of late Hollywood’s greatest white knuckle rides.

Plus David Lynch’s The Alphabet, a spooky little animated nightmare about a girl in a bed, blood, Francis Bacon-esque imagery and lots of letters…Cert PG

Day 1 1/2 - 7pm

The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant
Rainer Werner Fassbinder | Germany | 1972 | 124 min | Cert 12

All About Eve, remade and set in the extraordinary bedroom of a caustic, bewigged German fashion designer who falls for the young and insolent Hanna Schygulla.  The two women loll and bludgeon each other.  Irm Hermann is unforgettable as the slave-assistant.  The Platters’ 'Smoke Gets in Your Eyes' makes it dreamlike.  One of the great films about body language and camera movement (Michael Ballhaus is at the helm).  Totally gripping.
