Peter Ibbetson
Henry Hathaway | USA | 1935 | 88 min | Cert U

Two young lovers, separated by life and times, find an astonishing way of being together. Starring Gary Cooper, Ida Lupino, Ann Harding and Glasgow’s Donald Meek. Acclaimed by the Surrealists.  One of the great movies about amour fou.  A haunting classic.  One of Tilda’s favourite films.

Plus Begone Dull Care - 8 minutes of joyous, exhilarating squiggles and daubs of colour, painted and scratched by Stirling’s Norman McLaren and Evelyn Lambart. Music by the Oscar Peterson trio.

Day 1/2 - 7pm

Joel Coen’s Choice:  Dames
Ray Enright & Busby Berkeley | USA | 1934 | 91 min | Cert PG

A millionaire wants to clean up amoral Broadway.  The plot has a touch of sauce, Joan Blondell is gorgeous, costumes are by Orry-Kelly, but the main hit comes from Busby Berkeley’s kaleidoscopic musical numbers.  Trippy, floral, with more than a touch of Fellini, they have to be seen on the big screen.

Plus Margaret Tait’s 1955 short Portrait of Ga, a personal wee jewel about the director’s mother.  Two very different portraits of women!
