Lochs Fall at Final Hurdle
With the League title up for grabs Westside and Lochs took the field last Wednesday night in Barvas. In what turned out to be a tough hard fought match the honours were even as the game ended 1-1. This point was enough to give West the title for the first time in their history. Lochs took the lead midway through the first half when Robert converted a penalty awarded after a reckless aerial challenge on Jim. David and Jim had further chances as the half wore on but failed to add to their tally. Into the second half and Lochs looked the likelier side to add to the scoring in the first ten minutes. West then had a 15min period of dominance during which they hit the crossbar, missed chances and Scott Graham scored an equalising header. Both sides had chances late in the match with Andy, Lava and Robert having the best for the Lochies but the game ended 1-1.
West Side are deserved champions. They have strength throughout the team and two or three very talented players in Ali Barvas, Innes Iain and Duncan Maclean. Congratulations to them but also great praise to Lochs for another excellent season in which they finished second only one point behind the champions.

Records Equalled and Surpassed as Lochs Net 14
Before tonight 13 was the most goals scored by Lochs in a competitive match. They did this most recently in the League against Westside and Harris and in the Eilean an Fhraoich against Harris and Tolsta. Tonight this was surpassed when they beat Back 14-1.
To add to this record Don “Lava” netted 7 times equalling the single game scoring record for the club held by “Chuck” who twice netted 7 times in 1965 and 1966.
All credit to those who turned out for Back and kept playing to the end in what was a convincing Lochs victory.

Lochs Out of Lewis Cup Despite Pressure and Chances
They say winning football matches is all about taking your chances. Tonight Point showed that at the Creagan Dubh.. Lochs had many opportunities in the first half but could not score. Point had two and went in 2-0 up at the break. Sam and Mo took their chances the second an absolute beauty. Lochs totally dominated the second half but had only one goal to show for it. They hit the bar and missed several good chances. So it is Point who play Ness in the final of the Lewis Cup on September 6th.

Three More Points in Exciting League Race
Lochs picked up three vital points in the League title race tonight(Mon 18th Aug) when they defeated Ness 6-1 at the Creagan Dubh tonight. Angie Campbell struck first for Lochs before Ness took control of the game and Andrew Bubble and Micheil Smith looked dangerous for the Niseachs. Having equalised Ness seemed to fall out of the game as Angie, Robert and Jim added to the Lochs tally to make it 4-1 at the break. As the weather deteriorated near the break fans were sent scurrying for cover to avoid the deluge. In the second half Robert and Chris added two more goals to make the victory complete.

Lochies Hit Carloway for Five at Cnoc a’ Choilich
Lochs maintained their push for the League title with a 5-1 win over Carloway last night. Kenny Dokus gave the home side an early lead before Andy and Lava put Lochs ahead before the break. In a five minute period in the second half Lava, Angie(pen) and Peter secured the win.
Lochs controlled most of the game and three aspects of their play destroyed Carloway. Their passing was sharp and effective. Using Andy as the pivot point in the midfield Lochs spread the play around the field with clever intricate triangles of passing that Carloway could not stop. Secondly, their defence was brilliantly marshalled by Ally Mackenzie whose experience was a vital part of the teams play. Thirdly, every time Carloway got the ball Lochs pressed them all over the field with a high energy style of play. Great match. Well done the Maroons.

Hurricane Bertha and Rudhachs Can’t Stop Lochies
A match that was initially in doubt because of a lack of referees and always in doubt because of the weather, turned out to be the game of the season at the Creagan Dubh last night. The handful of supporters who turned up witnessed a 7 goal thriller that was in the balance right up to the final whistle.
Point started brightly with Mo, Sam and Sean terrorising the Lochs rearguard. It was no surprise when they took the lead through a fine Daniel Macleod drive from 20 yards. Lochs equalised before half time when a Point defender turned a Peter Mackenzie cross into his own net. Lochs had three other good chances in the first half; Andy hit the post with a header, Angie had a shot well saved by Maclennan in the Point goal and Peter Mackenzie tried to chip the keeper but Maclennan again saved for Point.
H.T. 1-1
Lochs took a 2-1 lead when Andy scored early in the second half but it was never going to be enough on a night when the rain was the dominant feature and the surface was fast and slippy. The Point front men Mo and Sam were giving the Lochs rearguard a torrid time and both strikers scored to make it 3-2 for the Reds. Lochs fought back and created several good chances. They finally equalised when a Nomie cross was nudged home by Don Lava. (The jury is still out on this goal but we will give it to the big striker at the moment. Even video evidence is inconclusive.) With the rain belting down, darkness gathering, the score tied at 3-3 and players and spectators soaked to the skin came the goal of the season. Peter Robbie picked up the ball about 30yards from goal and casually placed it over the keeper and into the net in the keeper’s top right hand corner. A goal worthy of winning any game. A goal that kept Lochs in the title race on a night they did not play well and when it was hard on Point to leave Lochs with nothing.

Siarachs Too Strong As Lochs Fall at Semi Stage
Lochs took to the field on Monday night in Barvas without three key players David and Robert were both unavailable and Calum Tom was still out due to a foot injury. The Siarachs were without Scott Maciver who suffered a bad foot injury in a recent Cuach a’ Choop tie against Carloway.
West began well with the mercurial Ali “Barvas” a threat down the right flank. His running and crossing were constant dangers to the Lochs defence. When the West did go ahead it was a headed goal by Donnie Smith from a corner. He was not picked up and his header went into the net at the back post despite Nomie’s best efforts to block it. On 25min Lochs equalised with their first real effort on goal. Good play from Dan and Peter Mackenzie resulted in Peter playing a good through ball which Johnny slotted past keeper Maclennan. The tie was won for the West when Innes Iain fired home after a poor defensive clearance by Lochs.

Hard Fought Ten Man Victory at Goathill Park
Lochs won the Jock Stein Cup for the 9th time in club history with a hard fought 2-0 extra time win over Aths last Friday night. Lochs won the trophy for the first time in 1995 with a 2-1 win over Aths. The club has also twice won it three times in succession between 2005 and 2007, and again between 2009 and 2011. The other season Lochs won it was in 2001.
Lochs started the match without Andy Murray(unavailable) and Calum Tom(foot injury). Jonathan Smith was on the bench due to injured ribs suffered during the Eilean an Fhraoich Cup tie against West Side. Aths were also missing key players with DJ Clinton, Steven Clinton and Scott Maciver all injured and Elliot Ruddle unavailable.
Lochs began brightly with good possession but failed to create many chances. The best came from a Jim O’Donnell shot which went past the post after David Macmillan had played a clever through ball to him. Aware of the fact that Aths had beaten Lochs twice this season already David Macmillan had his back four supported in wide positions by Robert and Peter from midfield which meant there was much less space for Aths to play through the Lochs defence as they had done so easily earlier in the season. Aths then got a hold of the game in midfield with Donnie Macleod outstanding. Cameron saved form a Gary Macleod drive, an Ali Koch shot went over the bar and again Cameron held an effort from Donnie Macleod low to his left.
On 35 mins we had a very unusual situation. The referee stopped the match for a “water break”. I wonder if this is the first time this has happened in Lewis & Harris football. The chances created before half-time were few and far between. A David Macmillan free kick was well saved by Titch and Athe sent a similar effort wide of the target.
H.T. 0-0
Lochs started the second half well with Robert, David, Angie and Lava all having efforts saved. Then came the major talking point of the match when referee Macaskill sent off Lochs centre back Roddy Morrison for a rash challenge on Donnie Macleod. The referee deemed Morrison to be the last man and that he had denied a goal scoring opportunity. This led to a period of tousy play and heavy challenges. A further water break calmed things down. Lochs had to bring on subs for Ally Mackenzie and Nipper before the end of the 90mins. Peter Robbie and Stevie Price deputised for them. With Lochs down to 10 men Lava had to play on his own up front and the whole team had to put in an energy sapping 90mins to cope with the young and fast moving Aths side. Lochs fought to stay in the game against the eleven men of Aths and indeed created some very good chances to win the game. However extra time seemed inevitable.
E.T
At the beginning of extra time Lochs brought on Johnny Smith for Jim O’Donnell and he played a part in opening up the Aths defence. His running and trickery down the right hand side ended with him being fouled. From the resulting free kick, floated to the back post by David Macmillan, Angie turned the ball back across goal for Lava to head home. The second half of extra time saw Lochs sealing the win. Robert made a Maradona style run through the Aths midfield and defence evading several challenges. His final effort was blocked by keeper Macritchie and the ball broke to the edge of the box where it was met by Angie Campbell who drove the ball into the corner of the net to make the final score 2-0 for the Maroons. Angie must have been mightily relieved to secure the win as it was his mistake that had led Roddy to making the challenge he was red carded for.
Quite a match. Won by dogged determination, experience and depth of squad. Well done David and the squad you fought for every ball and never lost belief that you could win the trophy.

Three Goals and Three Points at Upper Coll
Lochs picked up three League points in a comfortable win against Back last night. Goals from Jim, Johnny and Andy secured the victory in a game where Lochs had much of the possession but Back were dangerous on the break.
The first real chance of the game fell to Back but the ball came back of the post. Lochs had good possession but failed to hit the target with any of their chances. The Lochs chances mostly finished in weak efforts on goal. When they did find the target they could not get past Micheal Maciver in the Back goal who was having a very good game. Andy Murray gave Lochs the lead when he scored from close range following a corner. David Macmillan had a couple of chances saved by the Back keeper before Johnny Smith made it 2-0 when he drove home a Nipper cross at the back post.
H.T. 0-2
Back looked more alert at the start of the second half but their best chance came when the Lochs defence played themselves into trouble by over elaborating a passing move. However, they could not find the target with a shot. Good passing moves at the other end of the pitch helped Lochs create chances but they could not convert any of these. Andy and David had shots that were saved and went over the crossbar and Angie also hit a good chance over the bar. One of the highlights of the game came when ex- Lochie Gordon Maciver fired an excellent drive goalwards only for Cameron to make a fantastic save. Back missed an excellent opportunity when Lochs keeper Cameron went walkabout outside his box but they could not find the net. Jim rounded off the victory with a third goal from a Robert ball across the Back goal.
Well done Lochies. Always good to get a win at Upper Coll.

Lochs Topple Unbeaten West Side
Lochs took on West Side without Calum Tom(ankle injury), Peter Mackenzie and Lava(hamstring) in the starting line up. Lava was on the bench and would make a major contribution late in the game. West started without Dan Macphail and Innes Iain was on the bench.
Lochs opened brightly forcing two corners and from the second Angie headed over the crossbar. West were dangerous with their direct style of play and their excellent use of the wide Lochs pitch. Ali Williamson and Martainn Shields both had chances but failed to hit the target. Lochs then had chances through Stevie Price who shot wide and Jim who had a header from a Johnny cross saved. On 20 mins Lochs took the lead when David Mac drove home a fine free kick from just outside the penalty box after Johnny had be fouled. Lochs doubled their lead after 27mins when Jim fired home from close range after a scramble in the Lochs penalty box.
There then followed 10mins of West Side chances and an exceptional performance from Cameron Houston in the Lochs goal. First he tipped an Andrew Macleod shot wide, then he blocked the same player again from close range and finally made a magnificent save from Ali Barvas who tried to chip the keeper but Cameron managed to stretch his tall frame skywards to stop the ball going over his head. Breathtaking!
With Lochs up 2-0 and looking to be in control the roof – or at least part of it – caved in. Two long balls caused chaos in the Lochs defence. The first caused a misunderstanding between Nomie and Cameron and Ali Barvas took advantage to slot the ball home. Two minutes later West were level when this time Ali Williamson took advantage of a ball played through the Maroon rearguard to fire Lochs back onto level terms.
H.T. 2-2
Into the second half and West exerted pressure on the Lochs goal. Cameron made another marvellous save from Andrew Macleod from point blank range. The most potent West player was Ali Barvas who was causing difficulty down the West right flank and sending good crosses in the Lochs goalmouth but nobody took advantage of these chances. On 60mins Lochs had a great chance to take the lead when Johnny turned in the West box to find the ball at his feet and the goal in front of him wide open. Somehow he managed to fire the ball wide of the goal frame. Lochs hearts were in their mouths when Cameron fumbled a ball on the goal line but managed to grab it before a Siarach could take advantage.
On 65mins Lava replaced Johnny and added another dimension to the Lochs attack. He had at least two chances to score but could not quite get his efforts on target. However, on 82mins he met an Angie Campbell cross and fired home the winner to allow Lochs to progress in to the next round and a home tie against Carloway on 15th August.
Off the field the star moment of the night was when DJ DABS made a brilliant two handed save on the touchline to control a vicious Siarach clearance. It’s not too late yet. He could still relive his glory days in goal for Balmacara.

Victory Sets Up Semi Against Ness
Lochs and Point fought out a competitive cup tie at the Creagan Dubh on Monday night. Early Lochs possession and pressure came to nothing as they could not capitalise on the amount of play they had control of. The best chance created in this period came when Point keeper Maclennan made an excellent save from an Andy Murray header after Peter “Robbie” had played a lovely cross into the box. Lochs played some good passing football especially down the right hand side with Andy, Johnny, Peter “Robbie” and David involved. The only other chances of the half came from an Angie header, a David shot that went over the bar and drives at goal from Peter “Robbie” and Johnny that were both blocked. Point on the other hand had few chances but took one when Wally Maciver set up Mo who scored. They could have doubled that lead but failed to find the target from close range.
H.T. 0-1
Into the second half and Point continued to pose problems for the Lochs defence. Their best chance came when Wally bent a free kick round the defensive wall but it went into the side netting. Lochs then brought the game to life when David headed home a Chris cross to make the score 1-1. Andy then made it 2-1 when he converted a solo run with a left foot drive. His magic moment of the night which had the crowd applauding loudly. Back came the Rudhachs and Stuart Flower equalised from a free kick which seemed to take a deflection before it beat Cameron in the Lochs goal. More drama late on as both sides went for the winner. Firstly Peter “Robbie” fired wide after Andy had put him through, Jim then made it 3-2 when his shot was deflected past Maclennan in the Point goal and right at the death Point had a goal chalked off following a foul on Calum Tom. An exciting match which sets up a S/F v Ness at the Creagan Dubh on Monday 7th July.

Lochs Salvage Point in Battling Performance
Lochs picked up a vital point at the Creagan Dubh tonight coming back from 3-1 down to draw with West Side.
Lochs had early possession but Lochs a poor goal in 4mins when Dan Macphail poked home a corner which was allowed to run across the Lochs goalmouth. Lochs had chances but a Robert shot was well saved and Calum Tom headed a Nomie free kick wide. Lochs forced three corners and from the third they claimed a penalty following a hand ball in the West Side box. The ref did not see it and in the resulting breakaway Innes Ian Morrison put West Side two up. Overall the first half was scrappy without much quality play but the West looked dangerous when they came forward especially through Innes Ian and Ali Macleod.
H.T. 0-2
The second half kicked in controversial manner. Nomie crossed a lovely ball into the box, it came off the post and David Macmillan forced it over the line. West claimed it had not crossed the line but the goal stood. This spurred West into action and they had a period of pressure culminating in a goal by Gordon Campbell who fired home after an Ali Macleod effort came back off the post.
Lochs responded well to this setback and created chances but Angie and David Macmillan both missed the target with their efforts. By this point in the came Peter Robbie, Jim and Andy had come on for Nomie, Chris and Robert. A tussle in midfield between Campbell Macdonald and Jonathan resulted in both players being booked. Lochs then produced their Houdini act when first Angie Campbell and then Andy scored to tie the scores at 3-3. West could then have won the game but Cameron produced a fine save from a Colin George drive and then Lochs could have taken the points firstly when a Jim O’Donnell effort was scrambled away for a corner and then when a header was cleared off the West line.
In the end an exciting game. It started poorly but ended in excitement and drama. A vital point for the Lochies which keeps things tight at the top of the table.

Win Over Carloway Sets Up Home Tie v Point
Lochs welcomed back player/manager David Macmillan for this Jock Stein Cup tie at the Creagan Dubh against Carloway. The rest of the team was along similar lines to the last two games except that Robert was unavailable and Jim moved onto the bench. Carloway were much the same as in recent games but are missing a number of players from last season. Gone are Fraser Macleod, Calum Tom (Lochs), Seamus Macleod, Scott Macaulay and Kevin Gochan. Can any team afford to lose five such talented players?
The first chance of the night came for Lochs via a short corner. Nomie took it to Peter Mackenzie near the edge of the box. His ball into the goal mouth was turned wide by Jonathan. The pace of the Carloway front two, Jack Buchanan and Kenny Dokus, caused problems for the Lochs defence and one such break saw Buchanan provide a great ball in to Kenny but his shot went tamely in Houston’s hands. It was an open, entertaining with chances at both ends and the pace of the Carloway youngsters proved vital in opening the Lochs defence. They took the lead from an excellent Dan Crossley run down the left wing in which he evaded Nomie’s challenge before crossing the ball for Kenny Dokus to glance a header past Houston in the Lochs goal. 1-0 Carloway.
Chances continued to be created at both ends. Murdo Squeg forced Houston into tipping a cross away for a corner while at the other end keeper Beaton made a double save first from David Macmillan and then the rebound from Lava. With Lochs now in the ascendency Peter Mackenzie forced the ball home to equalise after Angie had played a long corner ball back across the goalmouth. Kevin Barra drove wide from the right hand side as Carloway fought back and David Macmillan saw a header saved by Beaton. Then as we neared half time Lava put Lochs ahead with a header from a clever Chris Mackay cut back. Lochs could have added to this tally when an almighty scramble took place in the Carloway goalmouth just on half time but the Blues managed to clear the danger.
H.T. 2-1
Carloway started brightly in the second half with Buchanan dangerous on the break. However, Lochs managed to regain control of the game and further chances came from kree kicks fired goalwards by Jonathan and David Mac and a Lava header that went past the post. The ever dangerous Dan Crossley fired a chance past the post for Carloway and at the other end a Nomie corner was headed off the line.
Each match this season has produced an “Andy Murray Moment.” One flash of the maestros brilliance which makes your trip to the football match worthwhile. Tonight was to be no exception. Moving left to right across the field he played Lava in with a wonderful reverse pass but Beaton was alive to the opportunity and made a good save. With about 15mins left Carloway began to push for an equaliser and had more of the play but could not break the Lochs rearguard. With minutes left Lochs secured the win when Nipper played a clever long ball over the Carloway defence, which at the time was situated inside the Lochs half, for Lava to run onto. He was one on one with the keeper and made no mistake lifting the ball over Beaton and into the net. A worthy win for Lochs. Point in the next round at home.

1 Minute Summary
In a hard fought cup tie at Goathill Park Aths came out on top 3-2. Robert Jones gave them the lead with a drive from the edge of the box which beat Gordon in the Lochs goal. Almost immediately Lochs responded when Angie scored from the spot after a hand ball in the Aths penalty area. However, Jones slotted home a second to restore Aths’ lead before the break. Into the second half and Lochs equalised on 65 mins when Chris netted at the back post after Lava had flicked on a Scott Finlayson cross. It was left to that old warhorse Scott Maciver to net the winner for Aths with 15 mins left.
Lochs have found it difficult so far this season to keep a settled formation. Tonight we started with 4-4-2. This was changed to a 4-5-1 midway through the first half as Aths were strong in midfield. I think later it became 4-1-4-1 with Robert in front of the back four and Lava on his own up front.
This was added to by having players not always able to play in their best position. Tonight we had Andy at centre back, Nomie at right back for much of the game, Johnny in midfield and David Macmillan in Thailand!!
However, despite all of that, the support for the team is very good and the fans are right behind the team as they take the field for each game. Great effort tonight, you ran the Aths very close which shows this could be a very tight League title race this year.
The refereeing tonight left a bit to be desired. It takes a brave man to put on the refs uniform and put a whistle to his mouth. I have the utmost respect for those who do the job. However, tonight the refereeing was weak and indecisive. All too often dangerous challenges went unchecked and the match at times threatened to spill over. A referee MUST show authority from the moment he walks on to the park, this did not happen tonight. There were several poor decisions but fortunately nothing that directly affected the outcome of the match.

Three Vital Points, as Lava and Johnny Net Two Each
Two first half goals from Johnny Smith followed by two second half strikes from Lava secured the points for Lochs tonight. Lochs started with Angie Campbell in midfield where he seemed very comfortable and had a good game. Callum Masson, playing wide on the left, also had a good game and failed to score only by the width of the bar. Lochs had a lot of possession and pressure in the first half. Angie, Nomie and Peter “Robbie” all had shots blocked or saved. Lochs played well in midfield but often failed to find an effective ball that could be converted into a goal.
In the second half Lochs continued to create chances without scoring. Robert several times burst through and shot at goal only to have it saved. Callum Masson hit the bar with a drive and had another effort saved. Late on Lava struck twice to seal the win. With 15mins left Andy Murray come on and delighted the crowd with a series of passes, feints, dribbling runs and his usual ball skills. What a player. A delight to watch.

1 Minute Summary
Lochs lost two goals in the first 6 minutes of this tie and never made up that deficit. Despite having good possession they lost a third early in the first half. Lava got one back but a combination of missed chances, the woodwork and Point keeper Alex Wright (who must be at least 140!) meant they were not able to score again.

Pace Waits for No Man
Youthful pace and accurate finishing made the difference at the Creagan Dubh tonight and both belonged to the West Side. In a match that could happily be described as a “game of two halfs” Lochs dominated the first period and yet went in at the break one goal down.
The game started with controversy when David Macmillan and DJ Macleod clashed in the Lochs box. It looked odds on a penalty for the West but the referee gave nothing. Macleod eventually had to leave the field. Lochs began to create chances. Lava brought a good save out of the keeper and then had a header cleared off the line. Angie then had a drive cleared off the line before a Lava header went over the bar. Not only were Lochs creating chances they also had good possession. However, the pace of the Siarachs was threatening and on one of these breaks Innes Iain Morrison broke clear and chipped the ball over Gordon Mackenzie to give West the lead. Lochs continued to press and Lava had another good chance but again the West defence cleared. Near the break Gordon Mackenzie made a finger tip save and pushed the ball onto a post to prevent a second West Side goal.
H.T. 0-1
Into the second half and the threat of the pacy West Side forwards increased as Lochs began to chase the game. Innes Ian and Martin Stewert were dangerous on the break and threatened the Lochs rearguard every time they ran at them. Although Lochs had possession they were not creating chances in the second half. Angie headed wide from a Nomie free kick. Then of 57mins young Morrison netted again to make it 2-0 for West Side. The subsequent Lochs pressure brought chances for Robert whose drive was turned away for a corner, Peter “Robbie” who fired over and Nomie who could not take advantage of some good play between himself and Andy. The West back four of Ali Williamson, Donnie Smith, Campbell Macdonald and Duncan Maclean were comfortable and mopped up Lochs’ efforts through the centre. Lochs brought on Callum Masson, Stevie Price and Peter Mackenzie and tried everything to break down the West defence. Young Morrison completed his hat trick before David Macmillan forced home a consolation goal for Lochs at the end.
1 Minute Summary
Lochs had plenty possession, dominated the first half but were thwarted at every turn by the West Side defence. Innes Iain Morrison scored a hat trick for the Siarachs whose pacy forwards proved a handful for the Lochs defence.

Plenty Possession, Plenty Chances……..Only One Goal
Tonight was a cold, windy night at the Creagan Dubh when good football was very difficult. Lochs changed formation to 4-4-2 and made some personnel changes. David Macmillan, Nomie and Johnny started with Stevie Price and Angie dropping to the bench and Peter Mackenzie not available.
Lochs controlled the early possession and created some good chances. However, they came up against a goalkeeper in top form. Jack Maclennan made some outstanding saves in the early stages of the game, the best from a cross/shot from Nipper which he tipped over the bar. Lochs had domination of the game but once more could not make their pressure count. David Macmillan played a lovely ball through to Johnny Smith but he shot over the bar. Further chances were created but Robert and Peter “Robbie” headed and shot over the bar respectively. A David Mac free kick was again saved by Maclennan.
H.T. 0-0
Against the wind in the second half Lochs again dominated the play and possession. Some good play down the left involving Nipper ended with a lovely cross into the goal area but Maclennan was there to grab the ball again. Another chance was created from a Nomie cross but again Maclennan blocked the ball. United began to look dangerous on the break and forced a corner following a free kick but Gordon Mackenzie caught the corner to end the threat. Andy forced a corner when he was through on goal and Maclennan blocked. Stevie Price played Lava through but control let him down and the chance was missed. Lochs finally got the break through when Peter “Robbie” was fouled wide on the right flank. Nomie sent the free kick into the box and Johnny Smith headed home from six yards. When Angie Campbell came on he went into attack with Lava and Johnny Smith dropped back into midfield. As the game moved to its conclusion United began to be more dangerous on the break. They had a goal chalked off for offside, fired a chance over the bar and Gordon Mackenzie produced a fine save to prevent a goal near the end. Relief was the paramount feeling at the final whistle. Three points in the bag.
1 Minute Summary
Lochs played well, had loads of possession, created many chances but did not have the necessary killer touch in front of goal. Nipper played well on the left flank and Andy, as always, produced a moment worth the entry fee when he produced a sublime flick to set up a chance. For United Jack Maclennan was brilliant. He did not drop the ball once, his timing was immaculate, he was brave, strong and always in control. United’s centre back Chris Dempster also was excellent.

Lochs Cruise into ABC Semi Finals
Describing the action from any match at Rally Park comes with the usual health warning. The pitch is very small and the ball tends to move from one end of the field to the other almost instantly. Any pattern of play is difficult to achieve and the slightest mistake can lead to a goalmouth incident. That said Lochs managed to net seven times without reply and Jim O’Donnell, making his first start of the season, scored a hat-trick.
Lochs made some changes from the team that lost 4-0 to Aths on Friday. Gordon Mackenzie took over in goals from Cameron Houston who has returned to his studies in Aberdeen, Stevie Price moved to sweeper with Roddy Morrison dropping to the bench, Chris Mackay and Robert Mackenzie started in midfield and Jim and Angie renewed their partnership up front. All this meant that David Mac and Nomie concentrated on their roles as managers and were not even listed as subs.
Harris began brightly and forced a mix-up in the Lochs goalmouth but could not force the ball into the net. It took Lochs about 15mins to make clear cut chances. Jim O’Donnell had the first opportunity when he missed the target following a good through ball from Robert. A cross ball from Andy was turned into the net by a Harris defender to give Lochs a 1-0 lead. Jim made it 2-0 with a well hit drive from the edge of the box. Before and after that second goal Andy had good chances from headers, one came off the bar and the other was tipped over the bar by the keeper. Robert then took over and smashed home two goals in the 25th and 28th minutes. The second is a definite contender for goal of the season and leads the list at the moment. Jim had two more chances but did not add to the scoring before the first half drew to a close.
H.T. 0-4
Into the second half and Gordon Mackenzie was called into action when he pushed a Harris free kick over the bar. Jim made it 5 when he scored from a Peter Mackenzie cross. The closest Harris came to scoring was at this stage when they hit the post but failed to find the net. Angie failed to convert a penalty when he smashed it off the bar. Goals 6 and 7 were scored by Peter “Robbie” and Jim who completed his hat trick. Johnny Smith and Roddy, who had come on as subs, both had chances to score but their efforts were wide of the target.
After Lochs had used all their subs they had a young team on the park. Scott Finlayson and Ewen Maclean both made their debuts, Johnny Smith and Callum Masson played in attack and the midfield trio were Chris, Roddy and Peter “Robbie”.
1 Minute Summary
Lochs were well marshalled by Stevie Price at sweeper, took chances well and gave playing time to several youngsters. Well done Jim on getting the first hat trick of the season and to Robert for his second goal a contender for goal of the season.

Pace, Passing and Power Secure Points for Aths
The only personnel change for Lochs last night from the side that played Carloway was Stevie Price starting in midfield to replace Robert Mackenzie. Johnny Smith was not in the squad but Chris Mackay and Callum Masson were back on the bench.
Lochs started brightly, having returned to their favoured 3-5-2 formation, and played the ball around well in midfield with some clever one touch football. They had most of the ball possession in the first 20mins but were unable to create good goal scoring chances. The best came when Angie put David Mac through but his chipped pass was too strong, and when an Andy Murray header from a corner was easily saved. During this period Nomie was seeing a lot of the ball and was influential in the Lochs attack. From another corner Nipper chipped the ball towards goal but Macritchie comfortably tipped it over the bar. However, despite Lochs possession the warning signs were visible even this early in the game. On the break, the speed of Robert Jones and DJ Clinton and the experience and guile of Scott Maciver were beginning to cause problems for the Lochs defence. From one of these breaks Maciver put Jones through but his effort was well saved by Houston. Into the second period of the first half Aths came more into the game and forced two corners which pressurised the Lochs goal. They had more possession during this period of the game and it paid off when the Lochs defence failed to heed the previous warning signs and left Robert Jones in space to run onto a Maciver through ball and chip the ball over Houston into the Lochs net. Lochs charged back into the game and forced their 5th corner. From this corner Aths just managed to clear the ball off the goal line. David Mac then fired over the Aths goal. Scott Maciver, at the other end, headed wide after Gary Macleod had made a brilliant run down the right and sent a cross into the Lochs box. Lochs did have a chance to equalise near the break when Angie intercepted a slack back pass but fired into the side netting from a tight angle.
H.T. 1-0
Lochs brought on Jim O’Donnell for Nomie at the start of the second half. They again started well keeping good possession. Angie had a drive well saved by the keeper and Jim O’Donnell toe poked a David Mac cross wide of the post. Roddy Morrison limped off with what appeared to be a pulled hamstring shortly afterwards to be replaced by Chris Mackay. As the half progressed a certain pattern developed which typified the rest of the game. Lochs had a good share of possession in midfield, they could not use it to open up the Aths defence in which Ali Koch, Stevie Clinton, Scott Macaulay and Gary Macleod were excellent and more crucially Aths were very dangerous going forward. The pace and running of DJ Clinton and Robert Jones paired with the strong tackling and running of Elliot Ruddall and Andrew “Bubble” created massive problems for the Lochs defence. Aths scored three more times through Jones, Clinton and Andrew “Bubble” to win comfortably. All three goals were similar in nature; a good through ball played into space in the Lochs defence, a clever pass/cross into the box where an Aths player was unchallenged, followed by a clinical finish. Although Lochs did create chances they were not clear cut and not were converted. Callum Masson did come on to replace Angie Campbell but he also failed to find the target.
1 Minute Summary
The Lochs defence failed to get to grips with the Aths strikers, while the strikers could not convert any chances created. Lochs had plenty possession but could not penetrate the Aths defence. Aths were strong at the back and in midfield and clinical in front of goal.

Honours Even in Season Opener
A crowd approaching 200 gathered at the Creagan Dubh for the opening game of the 2014 season as Lochs took on League Champions Carloway. A large section of those on hand were from Carloway and as always they made their presence felt on the touchline.
Carloway started without Kevin Gochan, Seamus Macleod, Scott Macaulay, Calum Moody (who is now back in the Maroon of Lochs) and the suspended DI Maclennan, all vital components of their Championship winning side. They had in their starting line up Lee Johnson (ex Ness), Jack Buchanan and Cameron “Tiger” Macarthur three promising youngsters.
Lochs fielded a strong side including Calum Moody at centre back and Robert Mackenzie, back from injury, in midfield. 2013 Player of the Year Jonathan Smith was on the bench as he is struggling with a knee injury.
The opening exchanges saw action in both goalmouths but the bulk of the play was in the heavily congested midfield area where challenges were robust, and at times overly aggressive. One or two of these challenges threatened to spill over into something nastier and the referee had his hands full in controlling the first half.
Carloway had the better of the first half chances and twice Cameron Houston was called upon to stop Fraser Macleod from opening the scoring. The Carloway goal, when it did come, was straight out of the Book of Classic Comic Football Blunders. Angie Campbell, to prevent the ball going out for a Carloway throw in, played the ball back to his defence. Roddy and Peter both went to the ball as did keeper Houston. For some inexplicable reason all three left it. Not so young Jack Buchanan who nipped in between them and from an acute angle drove the ball into the Lochs net. Lochs’ best chance of the half came from Nomie who failed to get much power into his shot and did not trouble Beaton in the Carloway goal. Carloway shaded the first period, created more chances and looked fairly secure.
H-T 0-1
The second half proved to be quite a different affair. Lochs took charge early in the half and did not let go of that hold. As might be expected they were stronger in midfield with Andy, David Mac and Nomie, when he moved back into midfield later in the game, running the flow of the game. However, they did not create many clear cut chances. Andy Murray provided a sublime through ball for Angie to run onto but he hit his shot over the bar. Peter “Robbie” produced a lob from the right hand side of the box which looked as if it was going to sneak in at the back post but keeper Beaton scrambled across goal to block the effort. Lochs also forced several corners but often the deliveries into the box were not good enough to cause problems for the Carloway defence. Meanwhile Fraser Macleod and young Buchanan were dangerous on the break and it took another great save from Houston to block a Fraser Macleod shot late on into the half. Just when it looked as if Lochs were not going to get an equaliser Jonathan Smith, who had come on for Robert Mackenzie, squeezed the ball over the line, in the 85th min, after Calum Moody had fired a header towards goal. It was a goal that Lochs richly deserved both in terms of play and possession. The game ended 1-1 despite Carloway forcing a good chance from a corner right at the death.
1 Minute Summary
Difficult to say much from the evidence of one match. However, Carloway do not look as formidable as they did last year. Fraser was not as sharp as last season. Their youngsters were good. Lochs look a strong unit but did not possess the killer touch in front of goal. They also have a strong squad if they can keep them all fit. For Lochs this was a much better result than the 5-1 drubbing we suffered in the corresponding fixture last season.
