Lochs Exit Highland Amateur at Semi Final Stage
Lochs travelled to Culbokie last Saturday to take on Golspie Stafford in the semi final of the Highland Amateur Cup. The prize for the victor was a final against six time winners Pentland United. Lochs had beaten Golspie on their way to lifting the trophy in 2003 and eight of the players in Saturday’s game played for the Maroons in 2003. This was Lochs’ 5th Highland Amateur Cup semi/final in eight years, an excellent level of consistency.
The match kicked off in front of a large and expectant crowd. Both sides had brought a large travelling support to Ross-Shire for the vital match. The early exchanges indicated this was going to be a close end to end match. David Black in the Lochs goal had to act smartly to save a Golspie header as early as the second minute and then at the other end, following clever play by Robert Mackenzie and David Martin on the left flank, the ball was centered to Don Lava whose shot was saved by Macrae in the Golspie goal. David Macmillan drove over the bar and Andy Murray had a cross cleared for a corner as Lochs made the most of the opening exchanges. Then on 15mins Lochs took the lead. Peter Mackenzie surged down the right flank after Nommie Macdonald had played a clever ball through the Golspie defence for him to chase. Mackenzie fired a vicious low cross into the Golspie penalty box and as keeper Macrae moved to the near post to cut it out the ball hit off him and went into the net. On possession and chances Lochs deserved their lead at that stage.
As frequently happens after scoring, Lochs seemed to take their foot off the accelerator and Golspie came more into the game. They looked especially dangerous through Shane Sutherland on the right wing, who was causing problems for the Lochs defence. Adding to Lochs’ difficulty at this stage of the game Don Lava had to be substituted with what appeared to be a pulled leg muscle. However, it was through the centre that they got their equalizer on the half hour. After Graeme Mackenzie was booked for his challenge on a Golspie forward Iain Innes thundered the resulting free kick past David Black in the Lochs goal. Five minutes later and the Sutherland side took the lead. This time the attack did come through Shane Sutherland on the right flank who cleverly turned past Ally Mackenzie before slotting the ball past Black. Lochs responded well before half time and pressed the Golspie goal but the game reached the interval with Golspie Stafford ahead 2-1.
H.T. 1-2
Into the second half and Golspie looked the livelier side. They used space well especially down the flanks to create chances. Then in the 60th minute an incident on the far side of the field from the pavilion resulted in Iain Innes being sent off for what appeared to be raising his hand to a Lochs player. In the melee that followed the red carding the referee and linesman were involved in a heated exchange of words with the Golspie management. For the next 25mins Lochs had the better of the possession but Golspie were extremely dangerous on the break. Alex Tippex Maciver had a shot saved by Macrae and the same was the result of an Andy Murray header. Lochs found it difficult to break down a resolute Golspie rearguard and their best efforts failed to create clear cut chances. Then with about 5 mins remaining Golspie won a free kick of the left wing and from the resulting cross Darren Pullen headed home to make the score 3-1. Lochs then threw all they had at the Golspie defence and Andrew Dunn, who had come on as a second half substitute, headed Lochs back into the game with only injury time left. Robert Mackenzie had a goal chalked off for offside and right on the final whistle a Peter Mackenzie drive, which was net bound, hit of David Macmillan on the goal line and rebounded to safety. That was the last action of a pulsating semi final in which Lochs once again showed that they are a match for the best the Highlands can throw at them.
Finally, it is worth noting that Lochs took a party of about 70 to Culbokie for the game. This was reinforced by more supporters from throughout Scotland. Once again these fans deserve credit for their loyal support and their excellent behaviour.
